An adult convicted of first-degree rape faces a prison sentence of 2-20 years in prison. An adult convicted of sexual abuse could be sentenced to 1-10 years in prison.
If prosecuted as a juvenile and found guilty, the 15-year-old could be confined to the Department of Youth Services until he turns 21 years old.
The juvenile appeared at a hearing in juvenile court Friday and was placed in the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Tuscumbia, pending further developments in the case.
Authorities said the reported victim of the attack is a 56-year-old woman who is a family acquaintance. Investigators said the attack reportedly occurred at the victim's house Wednesday night.
Police said the boy was accused of trying to take off the woman's clothes, but she managed to fight him off. When officers responded to the residence, the juvenile ran out the back of the house. He was found Thursday night by patrol officers. Investigators said the woman was not seriously injured.
