A Russian Sub patrolled in the Gulf of Mexico for weeks and we were unaware of it until it left, no matter, Putin and Barak are friends. Barak has been out of Washington for the last 49 weeks running for President  the airspace over Alaska was penetrated also by the Russian Air Force, put "Russian Sub patroles in Gulf of Mexico" in  your letter Box and read it yourself.

Maybe you and I were unaware of it, but I'm sure somebody knew it was there.

Just because the Berlin Wall came down and the USSR dissolved does not necessarily mean the Cold war is over. The tone has changed is all.  Subs continue to play cat and mouse here and there, just like always, just as our respective aircraft routinely violate each others' airspace (remember KAL 007? That's why you now can have a GPS in your car because president Reagan didn't want navigational errors and misunderstandings like that happening again.)

Better to have our president and Russia's president on decent terms. I remember too well what it was like when they weren't.  A large part of my life was defined by a fear of dying in an accidental thermonuclear holocaust that was closer to happening at times than many people are aware of.

Prince,   I'm certainly no fan of Obama and consider myself a Conservative Independent who supports the elected President whomever it may be due to the respect  due the position of President.  That said I did read the story about this intrusion and Russian sub and was, like many, surprised that such could happen in this day of technology.

It is though not as it was during the Cuban Missile crisis in the 1960's because the way technology is today subs or weapons don't have to be next door in order to find their target and the only difference is basically in minutes as to when the missiles would reach their target.  Still being able to get a sub undetected that close indicates that there would be Missile launch platforms that would get through and our protection net does have deficiencies.

I, for one, don't or can't blame Obama or his Administration for this for our defense and protection measures have been a function of many years of development and deployment as far back as Reagan.  Yes Obama and the Democrats have an input into funding of the military and certainly have an input and say in treaties we negotiate and what we give up and give away but I don't blame him or associate Obama with this sub's ability.  I just say the Russians are as good as we are in many of their abilities to conceal their subs and ships.  It is reason to rethink that we could ever win a nuclear or total war with Russia or even China.  Hopefully they will feel the same.

What I sincerely hope and pray is that among our Nations military secrets are defensive weapons that will negate incoming missiles and attacks upon the United States if ever such was to come that would enable us to strike in such a massive and profound way to eliminate any possibility of a second strike from the offender.  Having a person in the White House, Administration, and Congress that would insure our defensive capabilities and a strong enough offense that no one would question a first strike is something that should be in all our interest.

We need to eliminate the standing military and return to the idea of a "well regulated militia." We have the most powerful military on the planet and waste trillions on it regularly, yet it can't take and hold a two bit tribal country without much fire power. No country could ever take us, and it is obvious that no country would ever consider a nuclear attack, because they would be vunerable to the fallout from such an attack. The only thing the current military does consistently is kill innocent women and children and devastate the countries they illegally invade.

no I served in the Military and understand that everything we have is not out there for people to see, no doubt we have Subs laying in easy reach of Russia and China, but what they wanted to show is that they could destroy Washington by the time they could start to retaliate, and there is one of our Sub Bases close by in Florida, it was for show this time, and anybody that knows anything knows that you won't win a Nuclear War, two Countries may have a Nuclear war but the Radiation from it will cover the Earth and then everybody Dies, but ya'll know that we have North Korea and Iran which might start a war any time the Iranians hate Israel so much.

Do ya'll know that in 1983 we were 10 minutes from total destruction? this is per National Geographic and one Russian that was filling in for one of his Buddies that day refused to launch the Russian Missiles, it was a computer Glitch, according to it 1 american Missile was launched then a few minutes it would show another one launched until there was 5 in the Air, but his reasoning was that if we launched an attack it would be massive the Russians threw him out of the military for disobeying an order to launch but I am glad he didn't.

if the man had been there that day that was supposed to have been there we might not exist now, God works in mysterious ways.

Ah. Col. Petrov.

Not god, but a smart Russian guy.

The Russians had just implemented a satellite system with 2 in a 'molniya' orbit (elliptical) to watch for missile exhaust plumes against the black background of space. Trouble is they didn't also have a geostationary satellite to use as a reference for the other two.

September 26, 1983.

The sats, mistaking the sun glinting off some clouds on the horizon, mistook them for inbound missiles. After checking with his ground OTH radar locations (Duga-1 thru 3) and receiving no reports of incoming missiles, he decided there was no threat.

He had been trained that a U.S. first strike would be all-out involving hundreds of missiles at once.

His words: "You don't start a war with just 5 missiles."

The Russians have since parked a geostationary satellite up there to act as a reference for the other two to avoid the same problem happening again.

I remember this incident. I was in AIT at the time I heard this Russian guy saved the world.

Just one of many near-misses during the Cold war.

First the Iraq resolution was passed by Congress.

Second the reason the military has problems in Iraq is because the bad guys hide among the women and children.  Also the American public foolishly believes you can wage war without collateral damage.  I do no believe in massacring civilians but in war innocent people get killed.  Probably less Iraq civilians have been killed by the war than from Sudams regimen.

I work with almost exclusively ex-military personnel and can say they are some of the finest people and stepped up to protect your ability to be a IDIOT!

Oh my... The armchair cold warriors are out again... It must be election time... One must wonder how many of those posting comments served in the military? And how many have any background in international  relations, history, or doctrine?

First I saw no mention in the single, undocumented, report that the sub entered U. S. territorial waters. The artical did state that it had entered our "strategic" waters. Strategic and territorial waters are two entirely different scopes. Further, the report, which cites no source, but blatantly states that the sub went undetected... Now that presents a problem... If it went undetected, how did the "reporter" find out. Do the posters really think that if the intrusion were detected, the authorities would call a press conference to report the event? To do so would be a gross dereliction of duty... We do NOT disclose to potential foes our security apparatus!

Second, if the report is true - a big stretch - it is really not an unusual event. Both U. S. and Russian submarines routinely probe the missile and anti-submarine defenses of the other. I'd suggest that the Chinese are involved in these same activities.

Third, it is obvious that the report was aimed at discrediting the President. One must wonder where these protestors were when this great nation was led into two undeclared, unfunded, and unnecessary wars, one of which we are still bogged down in and where American men and women are dieing to this day - the longest war in our history. Russia's war in Afghanistan led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Our war in Afghanistan has resulted in a greatly diminished military capability and a demoralized military force. Obama's biggest fault has been not to get out sooner. No good can come from these wars which are draining our budget.

Sad!

I haven't figured out yet why anybody would want to be President, somebody is right on your butt all day everyday  giving you the ****ens whether Democrat or Republican,  never seen one come out yet unless his hair is gray, I don't think it would have any affect on Biden, he don't know whether he is washing or hanging out anyway, let me tell you something scary, Biden is only a heartbeat from the main thing, the world would really respect us if he was in power.
