Leo Terrell rips into Stacey Abrams for insulting ‘every black American’ over voter ID

Fox News contributor and longtime civil rights attorney Leo Terrell blasted voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams during a “Hannity” segment guest-hosted by network personality Judge Jeanine Pirro, saying the Georgia Democrat is “lying” about her support for a voter ID provision in compromise legislation offered last week by Sen. Joe Manchin.

Terrell, who appeared Friday alongside Stephen Miller, a former senior adviser to President Donald Trump, was responding in part to reports this week detailing a memo from the West Virginia Democratic senator outlining compromises he would support to a voting reform bill Republicans have outright rejected as an attempt by the opposition party to federalize all elections.

Among the compromises: Expanded early voting; requiring a voter ID or proof of residency to include a utility bill; and a ban on partisan gerrymandering of voting districts in states. Republicans have also rejected those out of hand, however. But Abrams has come out in support of the voter ID provision, though Terrell said he isn’t buying it.

“Let me be very clear. I want to be very clear and I hope Stacey is listening. She is lying,” Terrell said. “She insulted every black American and any person of color [saying] they couldn’t get an ID. I’ve got tons of ID’s on me right now.”

He went on to accuse Abrams and President Joe Biden of “insulting the intelligence” of some Americans for insinuating that they are not smart enough to obtain government-issued identification.

Calling voter ID “fundamental” to ensure that only Americans who can legally cast ballots do so, Terrell added, “We should prove proof of citizenship.”

He also knocked Democrats for hypocrisy, saying that just a few days ago Manchin was ripped for being a “Republican” and supporting “Jim Crow 2.0” — a reference to racist state and local legislation enacted in the late 19th and 20th centuries by Democrat-controlled legislatures in the South and elsewhere.

“Joe Manchin a couple of days ago was [called] a ‘racist’, a ‘Republican’– but now he is embraced,” Terrell said, adding that Manchin’s compromise was the result of his attempt to be “logical” and bipartisan while Abrams has her sights set on a future political career.

“She has political ambitions — and the whole key here is to inflate the voter rolls because they make a false assumption: they think minorities will vote Democrat,” he noted.

Terrell held himself out as an example of how a growing number of minorities are leaving the Democratic Party.

“Look at me. I went to the other side,” Terrell said. “A lot of Democrat minorities are leaving the Democratic Party.”

As for Manchin’s compromises and the fact that Abrams is now supporting them, that makes little difference to Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday that few if any GOP minds were changed and that the party remains opposed to making sweeping changes to voting laws that have historically been handled by states.

“In reality, the plan endorsed by Stacey Abrams is no compromise. It still subverts the First Amendment to supercharge cancel culture and the left’s name-and-shame campaign model,” he said.

“It takes redistricting away from state legislatures and hands it over to computers,” he noted further in a statement. “And it still retains S. 1’s rotten core: an assault on the fundamental idea that states, not the federal government, should decide how to run their own elections.”
