We just came home from watching Step Sing at UNA. This is the fourth year we've been to it, but our first year to have a student to actually participate in it. I never realized, before this year, how much WORK goes into these cute little ten minute skits! The competition factor to this show makes it a lot more stress than it really needs to be for these students, though, with their already busy class schedules. The show is put on for a great cause, which is to raise money for the United Way, and it is SO MUCH FUN to watch, but I am REALLY glad it's over and am thinking that we will just pay our money so our child doesn't have to participate in it next year due to the stress. Congratulations to the winners and to ALL who participated in this show in any way. I am proud to know that our younger generation is more than what the news and television portrays them to be. You are ALL winners to me for taking time to help others. Way to go!

LMF,

I was in Step Sing @ UNA 100 years ago- I know what your talking about!! It takes Hours and Hours of planning and practice. It is fun and what the kids do nowadays is pretty incredible compared to what we were doing in the 80's. After a couple of them, it is worth the $ to opt out. Once you hit your upper level courses, the focus should be on grades and spending the time studying instead of spending time learning dance routines and songs.

I went the last couple of years, but missed it this year. Who won?
Mandomama,

Alpha Tau Omega won the fraternity show with the funniest Where in the World is Waldo skit. It was really funny to watch! Alpha Gamma Delta won the sorority show with a Smile For United Way skit where they were all dressed as teeth. It was cute, but pretty much the same type thing they do every year. The guys seem to be a little bit more creative with their shows.

jh_75_whs,

I am really proud of these kids for all the hard work that they put into this, but my kid was out every night for a month at a practice that usually started at 9pm and went until 12am or 1am, and still trying to get up and go to class all day. The stress level is pretty high, too, because it is a competition between the groups to win a trophy, and these groups DO NOT take this lightly! It is one FIERCE competition, which some kids probably find fun, but mine was just really pooped out on the whole thing by the time it was over. We'll keep going to the show, however, because it is good entertainment for a great cause. I highly recommend going at least once if you ever get the chance. Nothing like a couple of guys dressed in cupid outfits and dancing around the stage to keep you laughing!
I agree with the comment about paying your childs way out of the show. The amount of time spent on practicing is insane. My daughter is exhausted and gets run down and sick during this time. Practice from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. for a month. We are at UNA to get an education. There is way too much emphasis put on the competition and not on the reason, which is to raise money for United Way.
