HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A college student from Texas believes he is lucky to be alive after a terrible crash. He was texting and driving when his truck flew off of a cliff.

Chance Bothe's truck plunged off of a bridge and into a ravine. One of the last things he typed indicated what almost happened to him.

He wrote, "I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident."

After the crash, Chance had a broken neck, a crushed face, a fractured skull, and traumatic brain injuries. Doctors had to bring him back to life three times . Now, 6 months later, he's finally able to talk about what happened.

"They just need to understand, don't do it. Don't do it. It's not worth losing your life," he said. "I went to my grandmother's funeral not long ago, and I kept thinking, it kept jumping into my head, I'm surprised that's not me up in that casket. I came very close to that, to being gone forever."

Chance's father said, if he had a child just learning to drive, he would disable texting and Internet on their phone.

As of August 1st, drivers in Alabama will face a $25 fine the first time they are caught texting behind the wheel.

It's overdue, but then again I can see problems with implementation.

Plenty of smartphones have GPS apps these days.  How's an officer supposed to see you looking at your cellphone as you drive past, and know whether you're sharing LOLcats with your BFF or just checking to see if you need to turn at the next intersection?

They don't.

Regardless, distracted driving is distracted driving. Pull over and check your GPS like anybody else with a map would hafta do.

I've been watching a BBS program on YouTube, Motorway Cops, and what is interesting is that even talking on the phone while driving will get you a ticket.  They rigorously enforce it, and can immediately put points on your license.  On the other hand, you don't have to have your license, or any other form of ID, on you when you drive.

I'm not sure if they have Chick-Fil-Lay there or not, though.

Hi my forum friends. Our friend "team" asks,

Is there any way we can somehow make this topic about Chick-fil-A? We've got a streak to maintain here, people.

Team, I am so glad you asked this question. It gives me a chance to share the story of the time I was walking down by the river, foolishly alone. I heard the gravel crunch behind me, turned and looked, and there was a giant chicken racing towards me. Well, I was terrified, but asked myself "what would peter griffin" do, so I stood my ground and got ready for a fight. But guess what-the chicken ran right past me squawking, "run, dan cathy is coming"!!! I am so glad I stood my ground. Had I run I could have twisted my ankle, I was wearing six inch heels, been pecked mercilessly, or broken a fingernail. Yes my friend, it was truly a sight to behold. I know that some of you won't believe giant chickens exist, but all you have to do is ask me and peter griffin. So, thanks for the memory.

"If you're traveling 88 feet per second and you're not looking where you're going, you're a disaster in progress." ~ Road Puppy

Absolutely!

88 fps = 60 mph

Distance traveled from observation of an event to taking evasive action is based on velocity and driver’s reaction time to anticipated/unanticipated events.

Unanticipated: A child darts out into the street. A driver’s reaction time may be more than a full second and at 60 mph, he may travel more than 88 feet before taking any evasive action.

Anticipated: a ball bounces out into the street in front of the driver. Logic follows that a child may be chasing the ball. The driver’s reaction time may now be less than half a second as the driver is prepared to take evasive action.

Or the driver is texting for one second and doesn’t see either the ball or the child.

i bet you coulda eat on those wings for days! you shoulda rode that bad boy home for a hellofa cookout!

that reminds me of a time when my dog escaped the fence and went missing for 4 or 5 days...

she finally came home with the strangest smell about her... she smelled of "charlie" and virginia slims... for the past year i've found "skunkape tracks" all around outside my house and sometimes, late at night, the dog goes crazy barking and running around the house looking out the windows! poor thing won't step a foot outside after dark!

Hi to all my forum friends,

Reading this thread I am reminded of a time when I was living in a van down by the river in Boston back in 1975. I was then married to a retired gypsy named Sandra but she refused to stay in my van. So, I eventually left her the van and the kids and moved to Hollywood to pursue my dream of being in dog food commercials for Purina. My career soon took off like a rocket.

I became well known for my many award winning books on ancient harpooning techniques and fat free goat recipes.

Yada, yada, yada the end.

We would have had a texting law way before we finally got one, had Andy Betterton, the do gooder who will try to make everything illegal soon, not included every electronic device known to man, in the original law he proposed.  I don't know anyone who supports driving while texting, we just have stupid councilmen who can't write a law.  The sad thing is, that Andy Betterton is not the most incompetent councilman, that would be Herman Graham the guy that throws temper tantrums and throws hamburgers at poor McDonalds workers trying to make a living.

I understand that the CEO of Chik-fil-et gets text messages from God.  I wonder if he reads them while driving?
