How many freaking times can one newspaper get one persons name wrong? Over the past few years I have been in the newspaper for various reasons. They have yet to either, get my first name right, or get my last name spelled right. Its simply amazing. Theres no telling how many name errors are in this paper, we just simply dont know there names to know any better. Its really not that hard to get a simple name spelled right. How about writing it down for a change instead of assuming you will remember it!

I have noticed some mistakes in TD over the past few years, but nothing too major, or if it was, they would retract and apologize.

Since we don't know your name, or last name, we cannot have an opinion on that, but I am sorry it happened to you, and maybe they can correct it if you ask them to? At least a retraction?

Boy, they would have a field day with mine!!! lol.

Actually, if you count spelling, mechanics and grammatical errors, there are:

- 5 missing apostrophes
- 2 unnecessary commas
- 1 wrong word error (there vs. their)
- 1 grandiose comma splice
- 1 issue of punctuation (even rhetorical questions usually end with the question mark punctuation).

I count 10. But he's got an excellent point. They also spelled my name incorrectly! Wink

Yeah, but he ain't making a small fortune off all of us TO SPELL it RIGHT.. Big Grin ...

Spelling on the forums, a moot point! I like to see good spelling and good articulation, but it don't always happen, especially on the boards... Typo's are PART of message boards.

The main POINT to this post, which looks hi-jacked is that this person's name has been in the paper several times, and his name was not spelled correctly... and you guys wanna jump HIM???? He ain't the one making the big bucks, he don't HAVE to get it right.

Would ya'll rather read the incorrectly spelled words here on the boards, or in the Times Daily News Articles???????? Thought so!

I would politely disagree. Spelling is important for accurate communication, as is the grammatical quality of a post. We can communicate more easily without an emphasis on grammar when we are face-to-face; then we rely on body language, gestures, and facial expressions. Granted, spelling and grammar on the forums don't have to be perfect for a reader to understand the meaning. The problem happens when there are so many errors that they slow the reader down to the point that understanding the writer becomes arduous and the meaning and intent of the post is difficult to interpret. We all WANT to know what people are communicating, and there have been posts followed by "What?" for this very reason.

That said, I entirely agreed with his post.

Well, considering we do not have a spell checker here on the forums, and that Spelling is NOT a lot of people's talent, then I would have to stand by what I said.

TD has a HUGE department, with automatic Spell Checkers, and they DO get money from each paper we buy to "get it right"...

So, that being said... Spelling on the forum is a moot point, there will ALWAYS be typo's, just like on any forum I have ever been to.

People on here are NOT professional spellers, and they don't have to be, it is more important that they just be 'themselves'... .

I absolutely agree.

I absolutely disagree, particularly for the reasons mentioned above.

I have never thought of spelling as a profession. I think of it as a reflection of a conscientious manner of communication with a fellow human being while expressing one's thoughts. Again, as I stated earlier, perfection isn't the point. Clear communication on the part of the writers so that others can understand their points is absolutely essential. Spelling and grammar are essential components of the English language.
And I agree wholeheartedly with dbt123. In fact, I've just about quit coming here because of the childish bickering and adolescent insistence on using "netspeak," or whatever you prefer to call it, instead of decent english. I'm a fairly good speller and I've managed, through careful consideration of what sounds right, to learn more about grammer since high school than I learned while in school. Shortly after coming here I was informed that Mozilla Firefox had a spell check function that would help. While that browser does have such a function (and I have since used it often) it is my finding that it doesn't work with the programming that this forum is written in. That leaves us responsible for our own spelling and punctuation errors. Sadly it's something that is important. And, to the OP, I'm sorry that they writers can't get your name right. Because such issues are important to me I've proof read my entry three times and caught numerous typos. It may not be perfect yet but it didn't take long to do and I feel much better about it. You amy find other mistakes but I'm not perfect, just careful. Good day to all.

I work with hundreds of guys who make over 100 grand a year that cannot spell worth a darn. They all either open up the word program, or they come to me, because they know I work crossword puzzles all the time, lol...

SOME people just dont take to spelling like others do, nor do they care. To expect everyone to be able to spell perfectly is just plain wrong, we cannot even get half our kids out of high school with much over a D average in everything, INCLUDING spelling, but we are supposed to be perfect here?

Nope, it'll never happen, not on a Forum Board.

mlholt, the netspeak you are speaking about is different than what I am talking about. I am talking about people actually TRYING to spell but get it wrong sometimes... and you are talking about "R U 4 Pres Bush?"... things of that nature. I have the ability to ignore spelling and read their points... and that is the main thing, the POINT people want to make.

Not everyone here has to be a genius. We just have to be part of this little 'community' and maybe the bad spellers can learn something without being insulted into doing so.
lol, yes I actually saw the spelling errors in my post prior to posting it. However, I was in a hurry and decided not to worry about fixing them. I knew someone would say something about it. As for the punctuation, you can forget about me having that correct. Yall know what im talking about though. Someone giving you their name, and exactly how its spelled and they still get it wrong. I was just a little excited about clipping the birth announcement of my first child out of the paper, and then for them to have my name wrong just kinda ruined it. Atleast the weekly lauderdale paper got it right.

You don't have to explain yourself to me... I am on your side! I totally understand your frustration!

Apparently, they care enough to make some sort of effort in order to present their thoughts in a way that is clear to their readers. Bravo!

SOME people just dont take to spelling like others do, nor do they care.

Some people don't 'take to' thinking. Perhaps they don't even CARE to think. And I've seen you call them on that, as you should.

I believe your first statement about perfection is correct. I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't know that anyone expects perfection. I surely do not. Read the comments I made above and hopefully you will see where that discussion is spelled out clearly. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to your personal high school experience. Did someone there tell you to be perfect? There is a difference in perfection and a conscientious effort to communicate as clearly as possible. One may not be possible, but the other is attainable with a few seconds of effort.

Actually, I am not speaking for myself, but from experience of being a member of several message boards. I have learned to tolerate people not spelling correctly, and not judge them. I have learned how to see that there ARE uneducated people in this world who are great people, but cannot spell good, nor articulate well, but GREAT people at heart.

I have learned acceptance... Accept them for what and who they are, instead of how they write.

Although, I do NOT understand why you are picking apart each and every sentence I say... I speak from about 8 years on message boards, and 27 years at work.

Tolerance, Acceptance, Diversity, and Understanding.. that is what I have learned.

I'll try again. You are speaking for yourself, based on the fact that you say it is from your experience. See? Spelling correctly isn't the point. One's effort to do his or her best to communicate clearly is important on forums designed to provide a space for discussion. Judging has nothing to do with it. There are great people who don't spell well, sure. There are also great people who do their best at what they do, including posting on a forum: that's the point. Secondly, you speak about accepting people for whom they are as opposed to what they write. On a forum, we only know people from their writings. Therefore, they should represent themselves as accurately as possible. Again, that's important in a community created through writing. Lastly, there is a reason you don't understand why I am "picking apart each and every sentence" of yours: I'm not! I was simply replying to distinct points with distinct answers for the purpose of clarity. And, by the way, congrats on your experience with message boards.

Since this topic has gotten so far off, I will say Congrats on your new child, protect&serve!!!

As far as TD getting your name right, I think that is bad business, since they are PROFESSIONAL, and the people on the boards are not.

I am not going to argue with you, dbt, or be baited, someday you may see where I am coming from, and someday you may not... no matter.

If I ever did anything to make the TD paper, I would definitely want my name spelled correctly...

Whew, I think I brought this back onto the original topic....lol.
Ick, that stinks... I can definitely see why that would be annoying, especially if it happened every single time your name was put into the paper.

I don't know what to offer though as suggestions go, but maybe one of their "people" will see this and ask the reporters to be more observant when taking down the details. Smiler Good luck for next time it's in there, that might be the golden time Smiler
