First of all I've never heard of her. But that aside...here we go again. Why is she even asked to perform...and why would the SA give in to her demands? Let her cancel. I would never give them another donation IF they did give in and do what she asked..."

I would have no choice but to pull out unless they very quickly make a solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community,” she wrote on Instagram".

- The Washington Times - Wednesday, November 13, 2019

The Salvation Army responded Tuesday after British singer Ellie Goulding threatened to cancel her upcoming Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day performance over the Christian charity’s purported “anti-LGBTQ” stance.

The international charity reaffirmed its commitment to providing charity “without discrimination” after Ms. Goulding threatened to cancel her Salvation Army Red Kettle Kickoff halftime performance at AT&T Stadium following protests by members of the LGBTQ community.

“Upon researching this, I have reached out to The Salvation Army and said that I would have no choice but to pull out unless they very quickly make a solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I am a committed philanthropist as you probably know, and my heart has always been in helping the homeless, but supporting an anti-LGBTQ charity is clearly not something I would ever intentionally do,” she said. “Thank you for drawing my attention to this.”

Her statement came after a photo she posted on Instagram showing her working with the Salvation Army at a New York City shelter sparked a backlash.

On Tuesday, the organization said it’s a “myth” that they discriminate against LGBTQ individuals and groups.

“With an organization of our size and history, myths can perpetuate,” David Hudson, National Commander of the Salvation Army, said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News. “An individual’s sexual or gender identity, religion, or lifestyle has no bearing on our willingness to provide service. We stand firmly behind our mission to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

The organization has pushed back against allegations of anti-LGBTQ discrimination many times before. A permanent web page on their Central USA site called, “Debunking the Myth,” highlights the testimonials of several gay and transgender people who say they were helped by the organization. The page estimates that roughly 20 percent of the residents at some of their more popular homeless shelters at any one time identify as LGBTQ.

Brief Analysis
An Australian Salvation Army officer did imply during a June 2012 radio interview that gays should be put to death. However, the response reportedly does not reflect the views of the Salvation Army as a whole. The organization quickly released a statement condemning the remarks and noting that "Salvation Army members do not believe, and would never endorse, a view that homosexual activity should result in any form of physical punishment". The image in the message was taken from another source and digitally altered to fit. Nevertheless, a senior member of the organization did utter the remarks, which suggests that at least some members have significantly misinterpreted the organization's doctrine. And, over a number of years, the LGBT community has repeatedly condemned the organization for its perceived lack of support and acceptance.

Detailed Analysis

A message currently circulating rapidly on social media claims via a headline that 'Salvation Army says that Gays Should be Put To Death'. The message features a picture depicting two Salvation Army collectors standing by a sign that reads "Gays Not Allowed".

The message points to an article by David Volz of TGV News that describes a radio interview with a Salvation Army officer in which the officer implied that gays should be put to death as per policies outlined in the Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine.

The interview described in the article did take place. In a 2012 interview with Australian journalists Serena Ryan and Pete Dillon, Major Andrew Craibe from an Australian Salvation Army branch indeed implied that gays should be put to death as a part of the organization's belief system.

However, the Salvation Army was quick to condemn Major Craibe's "extremely regrettable" remarks. The organization quickly released a statement distancing itself from Craibe's remarks and noting that the Salvation Army does not believe that gays should be put to death.

In the statement, Major Bruce Harmer, Communications and Public Relations Secretary for the Australia Eastern Territory, notes:

Salvation Army members do not believe, and would never endorse, a view that homosexual activity should result in any form of physical punishment. The Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine does not state that practising homosexuals should be put to death and, in fact, urges all Salvationists to act with acceptance, love and respect to all people.

The Salvation Army teaches that every person is of infinite value, and each life a gift from God to be cherished, nurtured and preserved.

Craibe made the remarks after the interviewer questioned him about a text from Romans included in the Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine that suggests that homosexuals deserved death.

However, in his statement, Harmer claims the real meaning of the text was misunderstood. He notes:

This is a misunderstanding of the text referred to. The Scripture in question, viewed in its broader context, is not referring to physical death, nor is it specifically targeted at homosexual behaviour. The author is arguing that no human being is without sin, all sin leads to spiritual death (separation from God), and all people therefore need a Saviour.

The image used in the article was taken from a 2009 article about methods of donating to the Salvation Army. The sign in the original picture reads "Doing The Most Good", not "Gays Not Allowed".

Thus, it seems clear that the Salvation Army as an organization does not officially believe that gays should be put to death. The organization claims to promote a policy of acceptance of all people. Nevertheless, the fact remains that a senior Salvation Army member apparently believed that the organization's doctrine supported the concept that gays should be put to death for their "sins". It seems quite unlikely that he is the only member that holds such a view.

And, despite the "acceptance and love" claims in Harmer's statement, the Salvation Army has repeatedly raised the ire of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community due to the organization's perceived lack of support and acceptance over a number of years.

The head of the Australian SA has said gays need to die. No matter how you feel about homosexuality, die? Really? I wouldn't give those people a dime.

You see how Florence backed out of its deal with them? Good decision.

You only had to go back almost 8 years to find something you could grouse about! And in Australia to boot! You didn't even bother to check it out...you were in a hurry and anxious to post (as usual) something negative and you willingly just wade in and don't care that you make yourself look foolish. BTW...I don't plan on giving Florence any of my business. Some man in Australia said something 8 years ago and now old John ain't gonna pony up her quarter. Makes as much sense as anything else the left does.

City does not plan to rescind Salvation Army funds

FLORENCE — Mayor Steve Holt said Wednesday the city does not plan to rescind the $38,250 it provided to the Salvation Army to assist with construction of a shelter for homeless residents.

The city's stance is in response to a June 12 letter to Holt from the Freedom From Religion Foundation that claims the city may not use its resources to assist "religious ministry projects."

In February, the City Council voted to provide a $38,250 match for a grant of the same amount from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The grant and the city's match, along with money from the Salvation Army, will be used to fund the $165,221 project.

Holt said the city considers the grant match a contract with the nonprofit Salvation Army to perform a service to Florence.

"They are a 501(c)(3) and we could have done this with a church or anyone else," he said. "If an agency is able to perform a service we normally aren't able to provide, we'll look at it.

"I'm sure the Freedom From Religion group has their opinion and we have ours also, and that is that we're federally protected to do something like this."

A representative with Freedom From Religion said the organization is awaiting an official response from the city before commenting.

FLORENCE, Ala. — Doing the most good, it's a motto the Salvation Army lives by and as the holiday season approaches, they're ready to give back to those in need.

The Salvation Army of the Shoals held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their Angel Tree Friday afternoon at Dillard's in the Florence Mall. The Salvation Army started the Angel Tree project to provide toys and gifts for children of families in need.

To participate, donors first adopt an angel from the tree. Each angel slip has information about a child, like age and clothes sizes as well as a special gift wish. Once gathered the donor will deliver the items to the Salvation Army where they will be bagged and delivered closer to Christmas, though preparing for the Angel Tree happens much earlier.

Before volunteers begin planning, families in need must visit the Salvation Army and register for their angels.

Florence Mayor Steve Holt spoke briefly on how new statistics still show a need for programs like the Angel Tree. He spoke earlier in November at his State of the City Address about how unemployment rates were down to 2.7 percent but as of this event, they are down to 2.6 percent. Because that number isn't zero, there are still families that need help. "This is our time," says Mayor Holt.

Salvation Army volunteers say there are about fifteen hundred angels that need adopting this year. They ask that if you can, participate, and make a magical Christmas for someone in the community.

First, you think it's okay to say that just because it wasn't in the U.S.? Okay, sure.

Second, you might want to check your facts on the city's grant money. As of now, I hear it's not gonna happen. Not only did the city get complaints, so did the state. Then check out to see what some are saying about local SA leadership.

Third, most of the money donated here goes to Virginia where the SA has its U.S. offices. If that isn't bad enough, even that doesn't all stay in the U.S. Part of that goes to London where the headquarters are. So much for your money helping locally.

No...but I am sure you are OK with that...along with the ISIS flag and any others that want to fly their flag in the US. You liberals only have a problem with the flag of the United States. That's the one you burn and desecrate.

It was not in the US and it was almost 8 years ago. I don't know if the man is even alive. No one seems to know. It doesn't matter...the SA made it clear at the time he didn't speak for them.

So much for your money helping locally.

Again...in your haste to be negative you get confused. Where did I mention locally? Everyone know the SA army helps all over...and even you can't deny the SA helps people locally. As for your link...you have to be kidding. I'm not clicking on any of your liberal hate sites. IF you *hear* it's not going to happen with the money from Florence...I say I heard it was...and couldn't find anything differently...and unlike you and your 8 year old Australian news...I did look.

First, you think it's okay to say that just because it wasn't in the U.S.? Okay, sure.

Where did I say that?  I didn't say any such thing. I said your news scoop was 8 years old and showed the SA has come out against it. You need to give up that online rag of yours if this is the best you can do. You aren't very good at researching and keeping current...factual or honest.

Some people don't understand how it works. They are only interested in tearing down...not building up. You give to the SA to help anyone that needs it. STILL can't find where Florence rescinded it's grant.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (September 21, 2018) – Because of the generosity of Walmart and Sam’s Club customers, the Walmart 2018 Hurricane Relief Fund at Foundation For The Carolinas has contributed $1,250,000 to The Salvation Army.

U.S., it is often first on the scene. As part of the communities they serve, they help people recover now and later rebuild.

About The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need without discrimination for more than 135 years in the U.S. More than 23 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a range of social services: food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. The Salvation Army tracks the level of need across the country with the Human Needs Index (HumanNeedsIndex.org). The Salvation Army has served survivors of every major national disaster since 1900. The Salvation Army does not place an administrative fee on disaster donations. During emergency disasters, 100 percent of designated gifts are used to support specific relief efforts. I don't know about all who give to the Empty Table fund, but I want my money to stay here in the Shoals, not be be sent all over the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia.

ISIS flag? Where did that come from? The local female capt. is Mexican. Check out the flags at their offices sometimes. How much money does she send back home? Again, give it to Crossroads or some other local charity.

Don't tell me who to support. I will make up my own mind. IF you don't want to help other people...fine. The Salvation Army was started in London btw. Why would you think because she is Mexican she is sending money there...and if she is doing it legally why do you care?  As for her having the flag in her office...how do I know that? You are less than truthful...and how do I know how it is displayed? Maybe you should check and see if any black members of the SA are helping other blacks. I know you dems are racist but dang...unless you know of something illegal maybe you want to hold off on the suppositions. IF you do know of something illegal...speak up. Make sure you know what you're talking about and that it is true. You have problems in those areas.

ISIS flag? Where did that come from?

If you had read the rest of my post you'd know where it came from. Let me repeat..."You liberals only have a problem with the flag of the United States. That's the one you burn and desecrate".

For the love of people: Salvation Army officers have fresh approach

I still haven't seen any proof of the Mexican flag in her office...or why that would be a problem for you IF the American flag was displayed properly there. Too...the SA helps all over the world...and I would imagine they would have flags from all over...so again...what's your problem other than your racism?

===========================================

FLORENCE -- Salvation Army captains Benjamin and Wendy Deuel say they have one driving force: their love for people.

"We're certainly what you'd call people-people," Wendy Deuel said. "Wherever we've been it's been our goal to build relationships."

Both Benjamin, 34, and Wendy, 39, were raised in the Salvation Army -- Benjamin all around the U.S. and Wendy in Mexico.

With Salvation Army-officer parents, both say their upbringing taught them the lifestyle they wanted as adults.

"Our parents were such examples of how to love people, and when we met in seminary we knew we had the same heart," Benjamin said.

The couple has four young children -- Isaac, 10; Josiah, 6; Jonathan, 4, and Selah, 2.

It's the first time in over a decade that local officers have had young children.

The Deuels replace Maj. Sue Dorman, who retired earlier this month after two years in the post.

The couple came to Florence from Greenwood, Mississippi, where they spent four years, about the average length of time for officers in one location.

"Already we love it here," Wendy said, adding that the new facilities provide a wonderful environment for the men and women served in the shelter. "We came in to a great staff, a women's auxillary group that's on top of everything, and a community that cares about people. We can tell this much already."

Benjamin described his leadership style as "by the book, where rules are concerned."

"We always, always want a place to be better when we leave than when we arrived," he said. "I take the rules seriously. The Salvation Army has a straight forward way of doing things, and I stick to that."

He said one point of focus right away will be securing funding for the shelter program.

"This community is so supportive, but there are also a lot of needs here. We have to fundraise and meet those needs," he said.

"We certainly don't shy away from that. We want the public to know that we're doing exactly what our slogan says, that we're, "doing the most good" with the money we have."

The Deuels say it's important to them to distinguish themselves in such a way that they keep the most important priority atop their list -- preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

"We're not just providing social services, although that's a huge part of what we do," he said. "We preach the word of God and build those relationships with people. The beauty of what we do is that helping people and building those relationships with the community is so intertwined with our mission to spread the gospel. We first and foremost want to share the love of Christ."

Wendy Deuel said her passion is to implement new programs and build on strong programs already in place. She said she already has some programming ideas, focusing on the community's children as well as senior citizens.

"We want to extend into the community and make everyone feel a part of what we're doing," she said. "We're ready to hit the ground running."

Patricia Clemmons, the Salvation Army's office/business manager, said the Deuels are eager to get out in the community and get to work.

"We look forward to working with them and introducing them in the community," Clemmons said. "It's fun to have children around again, and I believe this family is going to bring in a freshness that's good for the Salvation Army."

Talk about falsehoods. I've been a card carrying Republican all my adult life, but have voted "against" some Repubs. from time to time. I joined the Young Republicans over 25 yrs ago at Athens State and even held an office in that group. No, I'm not as active now due to work and family commitments, but that hardly makes me a Dem.

And no, I'm talking about SA donations being sent to Mexico to a SA church there. These "captains" stay in an area four to five yrs then pack up and move on to their next job. No accountability.

Sure you can give where you want, but anyone giving should want to know where their money goes. I like mine to help people in the Shoals and NW Alabama.

Take a gander at this from U.S. head of SA:

The average Salvation Army executive compensation is $231,979 a year. The median estimated compensation for executives at Salvation Army including base salary and bonus is $235,733, or $113 per hour. At Salvation Army, the most compensated executive makes $450,000, annually, and the lowest compensated makes $53,000.

Comparably has a total of 1 salary records associated with Salvation Army employees. 70 employees at Salvation Army rank their Compensation in the Bottom 35% of similar sized companies in the US (based on 234 ratings) while 67 employees at Salvation Army rank their Perks And Benefits in the Top 50% of similar sized companies in the US (based on 80 ratings).

Nice speech doc but it's full of it.  I think a lot of it with you is your wanting to control everything and being against everything you can't control...typical liberal behavior. Yes...liberal behavior. I've seen enough of your comments to know your claim of being a Republican is bull spit. You have no reason to rail against the SA except...in part...for your desire to control...in your mind they don't support the alphabet people and your racism. Does your *beloved* Crossroads only have white people helping them?  Oh..and uh oh for you...I heard they discriminate against people with certain lifestyles. Hmmmmm. What happens when non-whites are in need? I guess your great charity ignores them...after all...they might send something "home" and it seems you don't like the idea of a Mexican working there.  The Salvation Army is all over the world and helps where it is needed...even all races...EVEN LOCALLY. I can guarantee...based on the things I have seen you post...YOU wouldn't do the work the SA does for a penny less than they make and would probably demand more. The  SA is a huge worldwide organization....not some little podunk charity that decides to help based on race and lifestyle like your Crossroads charity has been accused of doing. Why would anyone give to them when they are in Florence and only help locally? I don't live in Florence so let the suckers in Florence donate to them. You posted things you claimed I said...that I didn't...talked about the woman being Mexican and having a Mexican flag in her office...talked about something a man did 8 years ago that the SA immediately addressed...and said other things. I'm tired of people like you wanting to be in control all the time and when you can't be...attacking a person or organization anyway you can think to do. You...in haughty LIBERAL fashion...declare you wouldn't give those people a dime...because in your mind they don't hold with the alphabet lifestyle. I would only stop giving to them if they gave in to her demands and made a "pledge or hefty donation to the LGBTQ cause".
