Bredesen is proposing another state tax in TN, it supposed to go to education. If the lottery is supposed to help education, why do we need a raise in taxes? I voted for the lottery in TN, but since I've had second thoughts. It sounds like a good idea in theory, but once I've seen it in action I don't know if it's actually helping as much as people think.
Almost NONE of the Tennessee lottery $$$ is making it to the local classrooms where it belongs.

Tennessee has 'beotched and moaned' about the need to recruit and retain qualified teachers, yet NOTHING is done SALARY-wise to aid the situation. Teacher salaries in Tennessee are $15,000 BELOW the national average across the board.

What many people don't realize is that there is a 15-year cap on teacher salaries at the state level, with ZERO increases in salaries UNLESS it comes from the LOCAL level. McNairy County, TN teachers went 22 YEARS without a local payraise. MANY of Tennessee's school systems fail to pay more than the state-required 45% towards major medical insurance premiums. And MANY folks fail to realize that teachers are only paid for 10 months out of the year. Teachers are UNEMPLOYED for 2 months EVERY YEAR.

As has been pointed out earlier, MOST of the Tennessee lottery revenue goes towards administrative fees (IIRC, Tennessee's Lottery Director is from Florida). She makes IN EXCESS of $100,000/year PLUS regular bonuses and for funding state scholarships. I was a teacher in Florida when she ran the lottery there. She's NO friend of education.

on the lottery in Tennessee is very good! I live about 2 miles from Berry's and I know the real facts there. It is great for the state of Tennessee and the way they are helping education. It is high time is Alabama for the people to wake up. TheSwindleMaster

With ya on this one buddy!!! Smiler
I know a couple of people who live in Nashville who are a little bit "in the know"... they told me that they were afraid of losing OTHER states $$$$$$ and are now putting the monies away in case that happens....

They plan on putting some of the money toward campaigning AGAINST Alabama getting the lottery.

Similar to the 1982 Wet/DRY election in Colbert County... that made a Ghost Town out of all the places at the Tenn/Ala State Line, they just don't want to see this happen again. There is boatloads of money going into Tennessee from Alabamians WANTING to be part of the Lottery, and Tennessee does NOT want to lose that.

"Remember, you can never win the lottery, if you do NOT buy the ticket"
dogsoldier... that is one of the MAJOR problems with our Country... the politicians have their HANDS into every cookie jar there is available... they just love them... GREED!!!! GREED!!!!

We need to write to them, all of us, and let them know they are GONE, and that we will get someone HONEST in there.. change them out every 4 years to avoid the corruption that comes their way.... We need to DEMAND they get their hands out of OUR cookie jar... Stand up for our rights, let them know they are on their last leg because of their corrupt decisions.

It would work.

THEN and ONLY THEN will anything EVER get done FOR the People of the United States!!!
'Honesty' and 'politican' should NEVER be used in the same breath!

MOST of today's politicans 'see' a 'vast gulf' separating 'them' from 'us'. 'They' don't see themselves as being held accountable to ANYbody for ANYthing. Diane SWINE(Fein)stein (D-CA) has been quoted as saying just that....yet she STILL gets reelected, time and time again.

America's voters have become APATHETIC, rightfully thinking that their vote NO LONGER COUNTS...so MOST of today's eligible voters DON'T VOTE. Research has shown that LESS THAN 35% of eligible American voters actually vote.

Ooops, dogsoldier, sorry about that oxymoron!!! But I do think that at some time, SOME of them WERE honest, we just need one who knows how to STAY that way... but GREED always takes them over, it engulfs them, at OUR expense!!!

There just HAS to be a way for Americans to let their representives KNOW what they expect from them... no less than that will do!!!

And there HAS to be a way of finding someone to run the country with the love in their hearts FOR the country so they dont screw us all up, ... but in MY lifetime, I shall ALWAYS have to pay for Bush/Cheney's endeavors and LIES, so shall my kids, so shall my grandkids.. This will cost even unborn children for many many years to come. Mad
