In reality, everyone experiences every little moment of life differently than the next- to generalize is futile. Some kids are taught religion from an early age and are fine- some stay, some go. Some kids have no religion in their upbringing and find God as an adult. Some don't. Is it wrong to teach a toddler/young child about God? No. It's installing morals and values from early on- that's what we do as parents. To generalize and say that religious upbringing is traumatic across the board is just absurd. Jank had a bad experience - and for that I am truly sorry. But at my child's baptism, I promised to raise them in the faith. In a loving and nurturing way. Not all religious people are freaks.

To generalize and say that religious upbringing is traumatic across the board is just absurd.

--------------------------------------------------

I don't know who said it was, but on the other hand to claim that religious upbringing is NOT traumatic for some is just as absurd. I guess we could ask all the therapists, (not that they'd tell us specifics). And no, not all religious people are freaks, but plenty are. It cuts both ways.

No Jen, but you said if you ask people from all over the country some would tell you they were forced to pray, etc. I didn't ask every single person in my small town, but as I said, growing up, we used to discuss these things in school. In CLASS. And I CAN tell you that out of my class of 300, not a single kid was raised much differently than I was when it comes to religion. If not one of those 300 kids had ever been threatened with Hell, I assume none of their siblings were either. So let's double that, assuming an average of two kids per family. So that is zero out of 600.

Now, I didn't JUST talk to the kids in my class. I knew kids from other classes too. None of them ever said they were raised to fear Hell or forced to pray. so let's say that makes zero out of 1,000.

And have I asked everyone in the Biblebelt? No, but I have been on this religion forum long enough to know that things are done VERY differently in some of the churches there. Did you read Jank's account of her church upbringing? I'm telling you that no one I ever knew up north EVER experienced that kind of thing.

EVER.

Yes o no, I certainly did say IF you asked people from ALL over the country, I did not say if you asked everyone. I also said that SOME would tell you they were forced to pray. AND I also said that neither I nor the other children in my church was forced to pray. And I said that for the very reason YOU stated. I have read/heard what people from all over have said about it. And again, just because you may not have met anyone that was forced does not mean that no one in your entire state or even your entire city wasn't.

It's cowardly to take advantage of a child that way, and not just about religion. There there are lots of four year old Democrats and Republicans, Alabama football fanatics and Auburn football fanatics, and union or non-union kids out there who should be left alone about all that stuff until they have developed some skepticism.

DF

DF, are you saying skepticism comes before and should be the first knowledge? why you are insane LOL

At what age is that theory taught? you have quickly become the patient and I had great hopes for you at one point.

Hold up wait a minute! I think I need to clear some things up here. I was never forced to pray as I child. My parents never threatened me with hell either. I guess you could say I was a fairly observant and attentive child. (If I do say so my self ) I would listen to the preacher during the sermon, to my teacher in Sunday school class. I listened to my parents and other family members talking when they probably didn't realize I was paying attention to them. When I would hear stories like Lot and S&G, Noah's Ark, Cain and Abel, I understood very well that the message of the stories were if you disobey God and sin then you will be killed. I didn't need anyone to say that to me and honestly I remember the stories being presented very gently. I got the jist of it with no problem. So I prayed and prayed that God would not strike me down. I can't speak for all people but I do know many others that experienced a similar childhood. They got the message that was being taught and they (like me) took that stuff SERIOUSLY. I believed every word of it. If you really truly believe what the bible teaches then you would be silly to not fear God. I was told that he loved me and that I should do good to please him of course, but every other person in my life that loved me (mama, daddy, grandparents) would never just strike me dead if I was disobedient. Yet every time I went to church I heard the stories about how those that disobeyed God were killed. What was a young child to think?

Jank dear that’s nothing uncommon; occurrences such as that happen when certain anatomical discoveries are made on the part of youngsters. I’ve never heard of God killing anyone over it in my lifetime and really that’s the only epoch I’m familiar with. It's silly to permanently deny God over it.
