Tuscumbia Police Dept. Shooting Wed. Night

i heard (from someone visiting an inmate) that a female officer tried to shoot herself and missed, almost hitting an inmate.

Sounds like she is a poor shot. More training may be in order.

Haven't heard if this is true or not. Just have a question......How many female officers are employed at TPD ?? How many male officers ??

Then the shooting was really at the jail behind the PD? Or did they have a trusty working in the PD area?

And how do you miss when you try to shoot yourself?

It is my understanding that this incident happened just outside the Chief's door, inside the police station, and was an emotional reaction from being terminated (RIFFED). The bullet went into the ceiling where I suspect it was intended...the ceiling and floor are hard to miss.

I saw something on WAFF about the suicide attempt. He or she must have been suffering from a mental illness. If I was fired, I would leave quietly and thank them. I work in a warehouse with a lot of lifting, very depressing.

This was the same thing I heard too...She ran to the park and was tased and taken into custody and sent for psych care afterward...just glad Tony was on his toes and not harmed or anyone else in the PD at the time...

I live in Tuscumbia. I think we only have one or two women cops. The one that I know is a very sweet lady and would never do anything like dat.

Here is what I have been told. Chief Logan and other supervisors had just dismissed the employee from employment. She left the police building. Minutes later she re-entered the building through a rear door and went to Logans door which was closed with the supervisors behind it. She beat on the door and Logan opened it to see her standing there with a gun pointed at herself. Logan and the supervisors tried to convince her to drop the gun but then she made a move toward going in Logans office so he closed the door. She fired one shot which stuck in the ceiling outside Logans office. Logan and the supervisors went out another door and ended up confronting the officer at the back of the building still holding her gun on herself. Officers tried to to stop her but she went out the building and officers followed her to Spring Park. At the time she got in the park officers from TPD, Colbert County Sheriff, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and some firefighters all dealt with her. They eventually got the gun away and Colbert Sheriffs officers arrested her. Thursday agents from Alabama Investigators were at Tuscumbia taking interviews, pictures, and someone said they took pieces of the ceiling. The former officer may be in jail by the time I am writing this. The good thing nobody got hurt but appears a very close call for several people.

You seem to know alot about the incident. Do you know if the employee was indeed an officer or perhaps someone else, like a dispatcher?

Everyone has a Breaking Point, Some deal with things different than others. Just Thank God, Nobody was Hurt.

I heard most all of that on our scanner but only from Colbert Co., sounded very scarie at the time, I wasn't sure at the time who the lady was that had the gun to her head , but did hear of her going to Sring Park. From what I heard the Times Daily printed prety much same thing. So glad they got it under control before someone got hurt or even killed.

I think I have seen this lady cop a time or two. She seemed really nice. If I'm not mistaken I think she was one of the dispatchers.

My concern now is the talk of RIFs. The TD article said the officer was on a new-hire probation. Are there truly Reduction in Force lay-offs or buy-outs now in progress at the TPD?

I don't know where you got that information. I talked with Tony this morning and he said right the opposite. He said Tuscumbia is in as sound a financial state in many many years. As a matter of fact Mayor Shoemaker and the Council are working with him to increase salaries. Tony even said the situation the other night makes retaining the great officers at TPD that much more important and salaries are part of the equation.

She was working dispatch, but only because she got injured while at the academy. She was not a sworn officer yet.

I guess i just can't imagine what in the world would be going thru someones head to do something like that over a job as an officer around here. Talk about putting your life on the line daily for peanuts...

I guess by now you've all read the article in today's paper on this. Sounds like the girl has some problems other than just her job. I hope she will recover and be able to find another job.

I concur with this statement.

I am glad no one was hurt and that Tony did what he had to do. And also I think that every officer should have a least 24 hrs. and no less in the training of Mental Health Crisis Intervention it is way over due.

Verdane, Sheldivr used the term RIF. That's why I asked is this was actually happening.

Yeah, this girl was on probation as a new hire as I understand it. RIF wouldn't be the term.

Nope, not Sassy Kims. Sassy is a veteran officer.
