I see, you were just advocating hunting them and then letting them go.

For those who are utilitarian in nature, just ask a farmer what he would do without cats. It would logically follow that the price of grain products would rise steeply for all of us--particularly affecting vegetarians.

Thanks, SNadvocate, for the update on the PAWS program.

Cats have claws and naturally "knead" on comfortable surfaces (as any cat owner knows), such as the cushions that are on all of the boats. Is PAWS and/or the cat feeders going to be liable for damages??? People will feed these cats, thinking that they are doing a great thing for the world, yet they will go out and eat meat products everyday. Can someone tell me the difference between a cat (or any other domesticated animal) and a cow or a pig? And the Oneal Bridge cats aren't even domesticated. What do you about the gulls? Feed them Alka Seltzer? Roll Eyes
There is a HUGE difference between bird poop landing on your boat and cat claws tearing up your vinyl. Bird poop washes off easily. What exactly is your question/confusion? You can easily wash off the bird poop, but cat claws ensue much $$ for recovering.
Additionally, as a long-time boat owner - no squirels, etc. come aboard the boats other than the ferral cats and occational bird droppings. A spider or an ant may crawl up the ropes, as well. But THAT'S it. The ferral cats are, and have been, a problem.

Yes, most people think dogs and cats are special. If you don't, that's your business. If you harm one, that's my business and the business of the authorities as well.

As I said I trap cats and take then to the shelter from MY PROPERTY. I will not harm cats or dogs with the exception of a pit bull if it comes on my property. I have a child and pits are more dangerous that a gun left laying around. You would have to pick up the gun for something to happen.

I like cats as much as the next person, my kids have two, and I think you're off your rocker.

Where in the world did this guy say he would kill the cats? All he said was that people feeding them were helping make a bad situation worse. He's right. They're not spayed or neutered, so they're only going to make more and more kittens that will grow up to be hungry and starving strays covered with parasites. You and I both know not all of those are going to live in those conditions. Would YOU want to live like that?

I agree with George Sand who said "They should be trapped and taken to the shelter. It's cruel to let them live with fleas, mites, going hungry, etc." If you had real compassion for them you'd be carrying them to the shelter so they have a CHANCE of getting adopted instead of throwing out attaboys to the ones feeding them. I know those people have the best of intentions but we know the road that paves. If it really bothers you so much, take one, some, or all of them home with you and find good homes for them.

Fire , where do they come from ? Its always the newbie that comes on here showing his azz . Roll Eyes
I bet The warden lives under the bridge !!!!

Zaped, Everyone who reads these forums knows that Firenze is very passionate about animal protection. Having said that I worked in the insurance industry for a number of years and could sypathize with your argument about personal property damage expenses. But...you lost me completely with one word. Salty made one comment on this thread and earned your wrath enough to resort to name calling...childish much?

exCUSE me??? I drive across O'Neal bridge twice a day and see the metal roofs at the marina COVERED with white seabirds every day. Maybe they're not gulls, but whatever they are, I'll bet they still poop all over the boats. And another thing...calling someone (me) a butthead? How old are you? Three? Roll Eyes
Obviously there are differing opinions on the innate value of dogs and cats. Zaped used the word hunt. Hunting is not trapping.

Yes, Warden, PAWS does trap these animals and neuters them. If you were familiar with the organization you would know this.

Why does it take so long? It seems a trap cannot go unattended. Those from the lower stata of socitey steal the traps (which may cost as much as $100.00 each) and use them for personal hunting. Oh, yeah, possum tastes so good this time or year.

Yes, some of these cats are ill for various reason. Rabies isn't one of them. Neither is fleas in all probability. When in the wild (outdoors), fleas prefer small rodents that cannot scratch.

It will take some time, but PAWS and others will make a difference here. As for the banded gulls, they come every winter and leave every summer. I haven't a clue about the minnow situation, but as long as there are McDonad's french fries, etc., they will come. Yes, I feed them too!
