I agree with the statements of "dont be in a bar naked and this wont happen to you."
I do happen to have kids that go to OTR and if my daughter was in there and said naked man was in there. I would not mind a burlap sack over his head and rodney king him.
I am not of the mind set of wait till he does something to someone then we can arrest him. I believe in preventing crime not reacting to it.
Good job FPD!
Haha, set’um up Joe. Florence needs drunks.
Umm let’s see here……why this is a case of responsible drinkin’ gone wild. ..>>snicker<< >>snot<<

The man has mental problems, and has had SEVERAL run ins with the police and is known for violent behavior. He did strip naked and go into OTR and sat at the bar and tried to order a drink. When officers arrived he was asked to come outside. Once outside he started fighting with officers, he was tazed with 3 cycles and finally became compliant. The man is fine, he is being treated for his mental illness and is clothed. All charges have been dropped because he needed to be treated for mental illness not sit in jail. Yes sometimes things look violent but sometimes certain actions are necessary to prevent serious injuries and so everyone can go home safe at the end of the night and in this case everyone did.
No problem unless the shock kills you. Isn't it amazing how the mental institutions get along without the use of tasers?

That got to be the stupid statement of the day...

Again, it sounds as if the taser is deployed as the man is falling after the strike. What was the point of the strike if the taser is ready to be deployed? Why tase him on the way down?

Yep, powerful drugs and straight jackets usually work wonders. So, you want to arm the police with tranq guns? They could take them down from a distance like a wild animal.
Get back on your meds.....

Yes, that is really amazing. Since you know so much about such things why don't you go to ECM and check yourself into BHC? Once you're all comfy start slugging people and record just how long it is before FPD gets there and turns your eyeballs into Christmas tree ornaments when they stick that taser up your refuse chute!
Officers do have to go to the mental health unit sometimes to assist nurses there. But the padded rooms and meds are usually enough. As for why use the Taser when the man is already on the ground well as you can see (not good but a little) the man is locking his arms under his body and will not allow officers to handcuff him. Taser was use to make him put his arms out. You can clearly hear the officer giving commands to puts his arms behind his back and he didn't. He finally complied after the third shock. There are not enough amps in a Taser to kill someone. The Taser has very low amps, less than defibrillators used in the ER, and only 50,000 volts. Ask any electrician amps kill, not the volts.

Would you be worried? would you call the police? would you confront me and ask me what I am doing?
Why? No crime has been committed....YET
stop making excuses for these cretins.. what they did to this guy, especially if they already know he has mental health issues is criminal and they should be charged accordingly.. anybody else would be.. what makes them special? because they are bagmen for the courts? that badge don't give nobody a free pass to beat people up and or taser an old man.. This guy needs a lawyer and he should sue for a million and settle for 5 or 10K in mediation because no jury in the world is going to see this type of response as appropriate against an old man with mental problems.. and the city and everybody else knows it.. that's why they WILL settle rather than risk a huge award from a jury.. hire a lawyer guy, that's my advice.
The Cold Hard Truth,
Looks to me like the FPD didn't do anything I wouldn't do. Forget wrestling with a naked man. I'll leave that to the Greco-Roman wrestlers of old. I'd rather shoot a naked man than try to handcuff him. Strip searches are bad enough. At least you don't have to touch the idiots.

Call and give your number to all the local cop dispatch centers. Next time we have a call of a naked guy in the midst of a episode of excited delirium we'll let you come handle it...mano a mano

If anyone knows this man, get word to him or his family to seek a lawyers advice. As the video as evidence he probably can get compensation for this abuse.

You ask someone else to do it. Why are you scared?
Okay, when I first saw the video it looked like the man was alredy in handcuffs and they tased him two more times.I went back and enlarged it to full screen and I definitely saw two blue lights flash one after the other on the man's body after he was in handcuffs.
come on guy, 5 years as an MA2 I have had to deal with a lot of situations involving intoxicated people, If I had ever struck a sailor or marine in the juggler like that I'd have been standing in front of the Skipper the next day.. you think cops walk on water SK, here is clear evidence that they are too big for their britches and this podunk community, maybe these guys should move to a big city where they can freely engage people who fight back, this is shameful, a couple of these guys anyhow.. this is wrong, this is a small community, everybody knows everybody around here, this apparently mentally disturbed person made a mistake for who knows what he was thinking.. but these cops crossed a line. plain and simple.. the OP got it right.. thuggery

Intoxicated and emotionally/mentally disturbed are two entirely different classifications, and require different responses. What will work with an intoxicated individual will only enrage a EDS (Emotionally Disturbed Subject).
Perhaps if you had spent a little more time as a MA than just five short years, you might have learned this.
I can just feel the macho in the air.

Is what they taught you at the police academy SK? because it has the aroma of BS, no 2 incidents are the same, there was no reason to do this old guy this dirty.. if you can't see it you should just turn in that badge because you dishonor it and the principles of to "protect and serve" serving an old man a whack to the neck and shocking the crap out of him doesn't fall into either of these categories

The only part of your comment that isn't complete BS is "no two incidents are the same". Other than that, it's just another of your anti-government rants. Jerry Fletcher is in the house, and quoting the "Catcher in the Rye".

As I said earlier, since you think can handle it better, give your name and numbers to the local police dispatchers, and we'll call you to handle the EDS mano a mano next time.

I'm sure SK has an excuse for this too..

Why is it that you guys are so upset about this? Witnesses at the bar seem to think that it was handled very professionally and in the best way given the circumstances and they were actually there. The officers didn't do anything out of policy and the man is fine and getting treatment in a facility for mental patients. The officers even had charges dropped against the man so he could get medical treatment for his illness. Why try to find something wrong in a situation that does not deserve it.
Why do you try to paint a rosy picture of the beating and electrocution of a old mentally ill man?
quote:Why do you try to paint a rosy picture of the beating and electrocution of a old mentally ill man?
the older I get the more I do not understand that some people just have a warped sense of things.
WH....I have never met you but I would bet that you are a DIE HARD democrat....EX Union worker who believes the man is out to stick you and the govt should fix everything while they stay out of your way and anything the police do is wrong and an infringement on your rights.
I don't think anyone can know what was going on and what really happened by viewing the video. If the witnesses at the bar think the FPD used too much force, they should report it to the Police Chief, or, as so many people do these days, run right to the newspaper, or other media and let them investigate.
Someone posted that the guy that hit the man was a UNA cop. If so, I don't know why the UNA cop would have jurisdiction Off-Campus, or why the 3 FPD officers would need him to hit the man before they used the tazers.
I am not a police officer, security officer, etc., and I am not related to any. However, I do know from seeing first-hand how violent mentally ill people can become if they have stopped taking their meds. He may have needed to be tazed 3 times in order to get him calmed down.
The police did the right thing in dropping the charges so the man could get the help he needed.

If I am not mistaken the UNA police have more jurisdiction than the FPD as they are Federal or State Authorities? I asked that question before and was the answer I got.

UNA cops have concurrent jurisdiction with FPD. It' summer and apparently they're bored on campus.
Let me be the first to thank UNA for assisting FPD. I bet there has been more than one occasion that they helped out and made it a little safer for the other officers.
Lets review the facts
1. The footage is edited
2. He was nude and emotionally disturbed
3. The footage was edited
4. He was not injured
5. The footage was edited
6. The only people who are complaining would do so if they helped the man across the street.

UNA has the same JD as state police.
When did a 49 year old become an old man.I am 47 & not crazy & I know if i was naked it would be hard to get a good grip on me if i was fighting.Good job FPD.
If they dropped the charges it's because they know they were out of line and fearful of a lawsuit that could lead to their being punished and fired.. don't try and paint these cretins as some kind of hero's.. at the end of the day still could have easily killed this old man and it's wrong

the way things are headed there aren't going to be cops in the shoals.. your masters will be getting their COL allowances, perks etc. but all you 8 dollar an hour coppers will be on the unemployment line.. sooner the better I say.
enough is enough of the driving around eating donuts, shaking down McDonald's for free burgers and burning up the fuel us tax paying citizens provide so you can beat up old people with mental disabilities and be general nuisances and menaces to the community
