Well, they have shelved the plans to 4 lane hwy 43 to the state line.

Not enough mmoney they say.

How is it they have enough money to resurface Second St in Sheffield, and Woodward Ave in MS every year or so ?

Does NO ONE realize that efficient transportation to, thru and out of this or any other area is the lifeblood of that area , or do they just don't give a damm ?

Flo-Laud have no elected officials that cares about improving roads. Sen. Irons is a puppet for colbert county and should resign. Greer and Burdine are useless yes people to montgomery. Dewey Mitchell & the county commissioners can't do anything but give county employees a 18 % raise over 4 years & then declare they don't have the money so they will raise taxes or fees. Now they are taking it from the Laud. cty development fund that is supposed to be used to recuit jobs. When was the last time they actually made new jobs. Huntsville has gotten hundreds of millions of dollars for their I-565 & just said the other week a new on/off exchange will be build in Madision costing around ten Million or more. No big company or jobs will ever come to Flo-Laud until they build a decent interstate road from Huntsville bypassing Athens, Rogersville and Killen. No trucks will drive on hwy 72 because of the dangerous & declared worst highway in Alabama when the speed limit is around 50 mph and that can go up or down within a half mail. I still can't figure out why 4 major highways are needed south of the river & none north of the river. You have alt. 20/72 thru Decatur to I-65, then you have State road 24 thru Russellville, Decatur & Red Bay into mississippi. Then you have State hwy 157 from I-65 thru Colbert county & finally into Laud. county then dead ends, then interstate 22 in Hamilton Al going from B'ham into Mississippi.  All of these highways are new or have been upgraded to almost interstate conditions. How in the world can Red Bay get a 4 lane almost interstate type highway into mississippi when only 2 to 3 thousand people live there.  All the towns around here added together excluding Athens don't even have as many people as Florence does. Flo-Laud. can't even get one decent interstate type road to I-65 then to Huntsville. Until the people we send to montgomery gets some guts and look out for us, we will never grow and in fact we are declining now. Sure we have plenty of min. wage jobs but we need better jobs & the people representing us are not producing. Flo-Laud. will have less power come January when we change district lines. Maybe our reps. should start voteing no on all bills in Montgomery until we get recognized, we can't be left out anymore than we are now. Most people don't know  but several years ago Huntsville wanted to work with Flo-Laud cty, Rogersville, Killen and Athen to build a interstate Huntsville northern bypass into Flo. Florence said they did not want to work with Huntsville and the others towns did not want to give up their speed traps, so that plan died. Maybe Mayor Haddock can light a fire under these people and get something done. Until then we will have to drive where the only jobs are in huntsville for 2 hours in what could be a 45 minute drive with a interstate type road. We are paying to much to our reps. just to get a few crumbs occassionally.

If you traveled all over this state, you'd see where politicians in favor with current administrations were paid with "roads to nowhere".   There's a 4 lane highway on the other side of Guntersville State Park where there are no people and no electricity, for example.  There are hundreds of examples in this state.

And why did little Franklin County get their 4 lane highways from Moulton-Russellville and now to Red Bay built 20 years earlier than Hwy 157 was finished from Cullman to a much larger Muscle Shoals.  Did it have anything to do with Roger Bedford being the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee every other year?  Could it have been with the fact that Bobby Denton was ineffective as a State Senator since 1972?  You're doggone right it was.

And why did we get shortchanged in Montgomery?  Weak state legislatures?  Voting the wrong way in elections?  You're doggone right it was.

And why did we not get the highways built that would bring in jobs.  Well, we had the jobs in the 1950's and 1960's.  This was an economic hotbed until too many union jobs cost companies like Reynolds profitability.  And the union companies closed up.  We had a chance to be an economic powerhouse and blew it.

There's no reason we're not getting our fair share of highway funds.  US 43 to the state line should have been the first road built 15 years ago.  Hwy 72 to Athens and a bypass to the interstate is long, long overdue.  Hwy 157 was far, far too late.  And the Wilson Dam Road disputed lands should have been taken by eminent domain rather than making the owners of unused, unwanted land semi-wealthy.

After all, it's just all Alabama politics at it's finest worst.

Tey, I think the opposition to the new hospital was as to where it was being built. I have no problem with where it is going to be, but if the quad cities worked together, instead of pulling against each other, the pizzing contest as to which side of the Tennessee Ocean it was located should not have happened, and IMHO , would have been built on part of the old TVA Res. Personally, I'm kinda glad it isn't going to be put there, because I live fairly close by and those sirens going all night would kinda be a nuisance, not to mention the additional traffic and the main thing this area likes - stop lights.

I'm willing to bet that most of the people that complain about this project cancellation voted for these anti government and spending and no taxes Republicans that took over the state legislature.   You dont want to pay taxes and you dont want government spending this is what you get.  Embrace it.  North Alabama voted for a tea party anti government no taxes Congressman Mo Brooks, so quit your complaining, as a matter of fact since we apparently embrace Mo Brooks lets go ahead and voluntarily ask them to shut down NASA and the Army bases in Huntsville and quit spending on that.  It's the least we can do since our district voted for Mo Brooks and all these other anti government people.  I accept the people's vote so should all of you.

You mean expanding 72 with an extra lane or two through Rogersville didn't do it for ya?

Of course not.  In the process, they lowered the speed limit to 45 MPH just about all the way out to Elk River while the road work was being done, and never bothered raising it back.  I doubt that's due to lack of state funds.

On the other hand,  when the state gives money to make travel through an area easier/faster, and it just gets used to make yet another speed trap/stop light, I doubt people will be much inclined to give the same community even more money in the future.  "Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me."

The main thing to remember is that the University of Alabama Football Team is playing in the National Championship Game in Miami.  Everything else is subordinate to that fact.  Those of you who have petty complaints about: sub-par roads/inadequate bridge maintenance/rampant roadside litter/underpaid teachers/overcrowded jails and prisons/court budget crunches/understaffed Dept. of Human Resources/ overworked DHR case-workers/under-equipped public safety agencies/laid-off classroom teachers due to budget cuts/cuts in medical staffing and patient services/cuts in school nutrition programs/increases in post-secondary tuition/cuts and/or elimination of after-school programs/down-sizing of state forensic services/freezing of promotion and new hiring in some law enforcement departments/budget cuts to state parks/...well...you folks just don't have your priorities ranked properly.  Best get with the program!

What does the Alabama football program have to do with any of that you mentioned?

The Alabama end was supposed to be finished at the same time the Tenn. end was. Tenn. finished its project at least five years ago, probably more. How many objected then?

As for our wonderful representation in our legislature, it's not been that long ago that then Rep. Mike Curtis stated he didn't know the Corridor X plan has been abandoned. Sheesh!

Best I think the poster was attempting to say that our priorities are all screwed up because we like football down here. Since major college athletics are funded almost exclusively by private donations/ticket sales TV revenue etc. the post misses the mark. Similar to another post blaming "anti government no tax people" who apparently believes that if one opposes wasteful spending then one is automatically against all government spending. Both posts make attempts at sarcasm both fail.

___

Grab that tattered old high school dictionary, dust it off, and read the definition of SARCASM!

But there's plenty of sin up at the state line--11 miles from my house.  And you can also buy draft beer by the gallon jug.  Yummmmm!

Just think of all those Tennessee State Sales taxes and taxes on beer that the Alabama citizens paid throughout the years--and the politicians in Nashville have spent on education.

I fondly remember the old bootlegger outside Tuscumbia that had a drive in window in his carport--and a 1/4 mile line of cars waiting to buy illegal alcohol products every Friday and Saturday night.  Oh, those were the days!
