Interesting article.  I took note of this:

"Greater Appalachia.  Founded in the early eighteenth century by wave upon wave of settlers from the war-ravaged borderlands of Northern Ireland, northern England, and the Scottish lowlands..."

These original settlers would have had reason to mistrust any government imposed on them and would have sought to protect their own interest by what ever means they could gain.  After all, it was the governments that created or caused the "war-ravaged borderlands" that they fled from.  That mistrust of government has undoubtedly been passed down over the generations.

Mississippi and Alabama has an interesting mutual history.  Miss. and southern Alabama were settled from the Miss. River and Gulf of Mexico.  Northwest Alabama was settled from the Ohio River valley via the Tenn. River.  Northwestern Alabama was settled via the Appalachian valleys that run  northeast to to southwest.

And some, who took their RevWar pensions from Virginia and South Carolina and settled first in East Tennessee, later settled in NorthWest Alabama [ca. 1815] pre statehood via the Tennessee  River when it was still Mississippi Territory.  Or so my families' documents indicate.

Great map, HIFLYER.  Wish I had one.
