Makes no difference.

A decent chemist can whip up plenty of well known biological weapons grade pathogens if they have the right facility and equipment.  Then, introducing them into the water supply of major metropolitan areas would kill millions.  And millions.  There were feeble attempts to guard against such activity afer 9/11, but it cant be done with the infrastructure we have currently.

It will happens one day.

My personal belief is that viruses represent more danger to humanity than most of the current manmade weapons available on the market.  These viruses can replicate and change themselves within just a few hours and minute changes in their makeup will change therapy regimens and their efficacy.  The flu pandemic of 1917-1918 was a lethal combination of coming at the end of the war when supplies were low as well as at time when people were closely clustered and traveling around the world. The best defense against such a lethal virus, and I am sad to say it, is is lethality.  if it kills quickly, only lives in a living host, and is transported by human-human contact, it tends to die out pretty quickly since it kills the host.  The bad ones are the ones which has a pretty good incubation time, but becomes transmissible fairly early on.  Alot of the sci-fi movies you see such as Outbreak and Andromeda Strain are not that far off.  A contagion such as this would require immediate quaratine and shutdown of travel.  The biggest immediate threat would be the lack of supplies getting into areas such as ours.  Food and gas would become precious within a few days.  More than likely it would require martial law.  I do know that Alabama has one of the best emergency systems in place in the country, and we have stockpiles of medical supplies, and access to antiviral medications, but the failure of infrastructure support in this area would be catastrophic.  It would get ugly pretty quick.  This is defintely my nightmare scenario.

If you want to read some disturbing things, google and read about "Ken Allibeck (sp)".  He was a noted Russian bioscience director for the BioPreparat industry in the old Soviet Union.  He basically defected during a period when that industry was developing a genetic abberation to create a virus with the effectiveness of smallpox, the viral effects of Ebola and Marburg, and the transmissibility of the common cod (rhinovirus).  They termed this a Doomsday virus since it would effectively decimeate a population.  This was almost 40 years ago, and the technology has certainly improved since that time.  There is no telling what some crackpot in a lab could be cooking up.  We know that the smallpox reserves were destroyed years ago, with the exception of two sample both retained by the US and the USSR.  When the old Soviet Union split up, alot of those scientists were up for hire, and you can bet that many of them were given a red carpet ride by China and other countries looking to get into the area of mass destruction.  Using today's technology it would not be too hard for someone who knows what they are doing to selectively target races, sexes, as well as ethnicities.

Der Fuhrer has spoken. More diseases, more deaths. Kill, kill, kill. I bet he's a republican.

Your bet would be wrong, Tin Man. Loosen the foil helmet somewhat.

You are a republican for sure.
