George can tell you....

I Lived to Tell It All

I will say I remember an appearance on TV during the annual CP Telethon...

First, he was late.

Second, he was so wasted he couldn't even remember the words to his own song and the words he DID remember were so slurred you could hardly understand what has singing.

I still remember the look of humiliation on the bands faces and the embarassment suffered by WHNT that day...
I thought he lived in Muscle Shoals at one point. I can remember meeting him in the early 80's over at Universal Cycle when it was on Florence Blvd. Me and my Dad were getting some parts off a used bike they had on the side in their junk lot. He and his step daughter came up on a Goldwing with a side car. He was very nice to us and his daughter was too. I later went to school with her for a few years at Muscle Shoals.
he did ride his lawn mower to the liquor store in Muscle Shoals when he was there. His daughter had taken away the keys to his car . Don't know whether or not he got a DUI.
He must have liked roofs, one person told me he came by his house and he was on the roof drunk and couldn't get down.
Seems he also was known to chase opossums in his back yard - You know he was known as "Possum Jones" by some.
George first lived on Wright Dr., also lived at Georgetown Apts. and Kendall Gardens, and also lived in Creekwood Subdivison for awhile. The first roof thing happen when he lived on Wright Dr. One time when Tammy was here she went to the stateline to get some extra tea, I think that was what it was, lol. I am not telling all of this stuff here.
I thought I remembered seeing him riding down the street in MS on his lawn mower. At one time I could tell you the house he lived in but I can't remember now. The couple times I saw him, he wasn't drunk. Tammy didn't live too far from my grandparents after her and George got the D I V O R C E. She was always really nice to them.
The lawn mower thing happen when George lived in Texas, not Jackson Hgts. in MS. While he was here he latter married Linda, who was Peanut's sister-in-law for about 6 years, he latter move back to Franklin, TN. and now lives in Enterprize, Al. where he has a restaurant at Country Crossing, if it ever opens back up. He still does concerts, last time I seen him was back a few years ago, at Sam's Town casino, did not get to talked to him, but did talked to his now wife Nancy for awhile.
He lived in Jackson Heights ins MSC 2 streets from my sister's home. I don't recall anything bad during that time. I do know one thing,,,,he straightened up and got back to a healthy lifestyle later on and is still a great singer and musician. I love his songs. It seems most of the really great ones have passed away. I hope George lives to be 100,,,and country music is not even my fav. But George Jones is and was great!!
I remember George and his Caddy with the "POSSUM" license plate almost running me over on Woodward Ave. one day. He was all over the road, probably drunk. I also remember when he threw a fit at Dale's restaurant and knocked over a table and chairs before he stormed out. He also did a little stretch in the mental hospital in Decatur. I'm glad he is gone. By the way, the lawn mower DUI happened in Texas.
I used to rent a little house at Brooks Acres. He built an a-frame house by Mr Brooks house in 75.I was waiting at the stop sign to get in 72 hwy.I looked in my rear-view mirrow and saw a mark-5 lincoln coming up behind me real fast. The car almost rear-ended me.I prepared for the in-pact,thank good-ness it stopped! I looked in my rear mirrow and George driving the car.It was only after i had driven down the road did it dawn on me who this was.Its a wonder he did not get someone killed here with his crazy driving. If he had hit my cherished camaro i would have whipped his butt!
George...
Lived in North Florence when the Lawn Mower Incident happen...George was out of Vodka...He was in his pajama's and was going to the bootlegger to get some more vodka, when linda called some Florence Police Officers whom she knew..They went by and she told them about the situation...They took the keys to all of his vehicles which were several at the time. The keys were shown to George so he would not bother linda anymore. He was told to go back to bed and sleep it off,as he was not going to get out on the road.
The Officers left and in a few minutes the call came in to the station that George was on his riding lawn mower headed down stovall drive...
The Officers stopped him and took him and the law mower back to his house. No! he was not given a DUI Citation..
Officers were given more discretion back then and use to take a lot of people home if they were close to their house when discovered.

During that period of his life, he had a major addiction to alcohol. Sober he was very easy going guy..Alcohol fueled another side sometimes...As it happens to all of us, age starts to change your attitude toward life and usually adjustments are made to soothe the body and remedy the actions of the past. It is my understanding,George is no different from you and I in that affect on his life..
