I had been a Cingular customer for years, but noticed (at least in certain parts of the state) following the AT & T merger, service in specific areas diminished almost instantly. I remain an AT & T customer because of the rollover minutes and "add-a-line" features, but the diminshed service makes me question whether upon acquisition a portion of tower leases were cut as part of the new structure. This happen to anyone else?
I have had T-Mobile for years and the service just keeps getting worse. I have a couple of dropped calls a week and get duplicate text messages even though only one had been sent. I guess thats one way to put me over my text limit so they can charge me for them. I have checked into other companies and I am going to switch to AT&T. I went to the new store in front of Wal-Mart in Muscle Shoals and was offered answers to all my questions. I don't want to post employees name on here but SHE knew her stuff. All of the phones on display actually work and you can play with them until your heart is content. I found out I was entitled to a 15% discount. Thats enough in itself for me to make the switch.

I haven't had this problem. Could it possibly be your phone? I'm due an upgrade. I have the Razor which I love so I will be going with another Razor, just updated.

I've been with AT&T since it was Bellsouth in the mid/late 90's and the only way to get a cell phone from them was to call the phone company and order one.
I've always had good service with them except for a few years ago when i had to send back 3 Razrs because of defects.
I was then given a free upgrade to the Slvr L7 (with iTunes). I've been using it for 3 years and i love it.

Interesting. I have had the opposite experience. The last time I tried Cingular was at least 6 years ago, though.

I have great success with Verizon.
Coverage wise cingular and verizon are about the same in major cities...get into rural areas and the cingular service goes down the drain quickly...
Billing wise, Cingular of all carriers has more error rates than any other carrier and this includes T-mobile, Verizon, Southern Link, Cellular South....

Customer service wise they are low on the totum pole...Slow to make corrections on the billing, and balks at giving you the credits you are entitled too...

Considering all of the above...Verizon is your best bet for customer service, more area coverage and very few billing errors...
I travel all over the valley and use T-Mobile. The only dead spot I've found recently was near the Ala/Tenn/Miss corner. Well, sometimes in Central proper as well. (Once Lexington got a new tower.) I don't have dropped calls with them and no problems getting or sending texts, but I don't do that many.

I had Cingular some years ago--did have dropped calls and a lot or roaming at the time.
when hubby & got married..he had sprint Eeker it was terrible.. he got me a line on his account. suppose to free mobile to mobile.. well we got our bill, you ready for this? $2350.00! yep I griped, I complained..they had failed to place us on the mobile to mobile.. and after fussing for nearly a year they finally dropped the bill..as we did their service. Have had cingular since then..no problems..a few dropped calls after ATT took over..
I have T-Mobile and actually get good service. I did have a small problem with the people once when I called customer service (phone price issues), but I went into the store on Avalon and got help. A very nice young lady called in and got my problem handled right away. I have been with them for around 6 years (since they were Powertel) and coverage has dramatically improved. Before that I was with Verizon (I think it was GTE Wireless then) and constantly had billing issues.
For those of you that have Cingular/AT&T....I worked for the original AT&T which was called SUNCOM when it came to Alabama and their towers where on a technology called TDMA. When AT&T/Suncom sold to Cingular they had a technology called CDMA that they converted all their phones over to. NOW....that AT&T has "repurchased" Cingular they have switched their towers over to GSM technology which is used by T-MOBILE and every other phone systems in the UK and US these days. (that is what makes it possible to store everything on your phone chip).

If you still have a phone that you bought with Cingular you have to take it back and get the upgrades and new downloads for your phone and it should work just fine!!!!!

See what you can learn on these posts!!!!
The best service I have ever had is with Cingular/Bell South/A T & T, with Verizon being the very worst. Verizon kept billing messed up every month.
About the low signal strength comments and dropped calls...they are all affected because these cell phone towers are like birds on a power line...the more on there the less capacity. I have been in one specific location and had two bars of signal, another time, same exact spot six signal bars. The number of users on a given tower causes variations in signal strength.
Verizon wouldn't work near my house or in my house. Also wouldn't work when I was in Orange Beach. I swapped to ATT and have had no problems with service. There are some areas that don't work but they are not as many as Verizon has.

I guess what was the kicker to make me swap was the guy at the Verizon store in Florence kept getting text's and couldn't find the time to wait on while we were at the counter. Hate it for them.
I started with the company that ultimately got bought out by T-Mobile.

We use a family plan that has 2000 minutes, free nights & weekends, free between our family, and I believe free between other T-Mobile users. No long distance or roaming charges as long as I'm in a T-Mobile area, and no roaming charges a lot of the time when I'm not. Free messages, text and pictures. Every number gets a $50 credit toward a new phone each year. I think one time last year, we (the four of us) went over our minutes limit.

We used to travel more and I've had good coverage in Boston, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, and generally in AR, AL, TN, GA, FL, SC, VA, MS. My daughter went to England last year for a week and was able to use her phone there, she is currently in school in Atlanta, and no problems with coverage there or between. Also, have coverage on the lake, which is helpful when you own a boat with starter problems.

There is one spot in Florence, that was down in a hole near where we used to live, that was always a problem.

If they don't have a phone that I want, I can always get the "unlocked GSM" version that works just fine.

Anytime that I've had a problem or wanted to update/add phones, the local store was super helpful and knowledgable.

I can also view bills, pay bills, send text messages, and other things from their web-site. I get today's weather, football & basketball scores sent to my phone automatically, and there is a host of other things that can be sent also.
