Why are you guys not worried about people who have six kids, file a return (on a homemade W2) for $600 earned in 2007 and get $3600 in earned income credit by claiming three of those kids; "sell" the other three kids to three other childless people - let those people claim $1800 each in "tax refunds" so they can split the $1800 with them? Thereby, getting $3600 plus $2700 in "tax refund" after working and making theoretically $600. (More likely NOTHING).

And yes, this is exactly what lots of people are doing.

??? people break the laws all the time...what else is new?
Crazy, this is an Earned Income Refund gripe. I did taxes for a bit. And worked with dozens (literally) that couldn't wait for tax time so they could get their "earned" money, which they did not earn. And bragged about how they let the neighbors "use" the kids to get money back. This is OUR tax money. Work your butt off and end up paying MORE while some people just lay up, fake a W2 and get $3600????

But, after all the fussing about some "alien" worker (worker being the operative word here) getting a tax refund NOBODY seems at all concerned that non working, lollygagging, over breeding "citizens" are getting these large refunds.
Im glad I dont have friends like that. Sorry to here your friends or people you know do that. You can be a good citizen and call the IRS on them and report them. They would get audited and get caught, if nothing else they will have to pay it back. Its the right thing to do since your outraged and you can do it and not have to give your name. Is it outrage or jealousy, I know Im jealous.
I'm sorry just because "a lot of people break the law" doesn't make what they are doing right ....

I worked for HR Block last year. We had some hispanics to come in to file their taxes. There were 3 of them -- they all used the same Social Security Number...we caught it when I was filling out their initial papers for the preparer so I told my manager and she advised them they couldn't do that...they left...

Another person came in with a couple of "tax documents" and a whole bunch of receipts -- let the preparer fill out his taxes and then when she told him he wasn't getting back anything and actually owed money -- he got up and left and never filed his taxes with us....

So yea, Vick -- it ticks me off that they do it, but other than "catching" them -- how do we stop it?
Vick13,

What you've described is illegal. People who know who is doing this should report them to the proper authorities. I got over being outraged over crime a long time ago...it still disturbs me, but it takes a bunch more than this to outrage me. People are going to take advantage where they can, and if nobody stands up to them, they'll continue fleecing lawful taxpayers.

I'm unhappy with the House bill that allowed illegal immigrants with an ITIN card to receive a rebate on the stimulus plan. But the Senate finance committee has already patched that hole by passing a bill requiring valid social security numbers to receive the rebate.
Wow...

I guess I am one of those people who are 'too rich to be poor but too poor to be rich'.

I would love to have more than one bathroom in my house... and I really need to get my carport enclosed to make room for my growing family... maybe I should employ these same techniques...

Oh.. and then maybe I could get a doctor to give me some prescriptions for some good stuff and start selling some pills too... I may be able to decorate my new additions if I fund it that way.

Wow, I feel better already.

JUST KIDDING... I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I did things like that. I would be in constant fear.

The company I worked for "forbade" us to turn them in.

How would the company know you turned them in? Are they employing these people. This is uncharacteristic of an American company and you should honestly think about working somewhere else if you think this is dishonest and a company forbids you to do this. Man I got to get the duct tape to wrap my head to keep it from exploding. Now this is outrageous.
Well, Vick I am not sure when you worked for a tax prep firm. I worked at one for 9 years. I know about what you are talking about as far as people trying to do this and get away with it...however... Each child has to have a SS# as you know. When I was working Earned Income Credit became hard to get especially if a child had been claimed one year on a return then "sold" to someone else on the next year's return. At one time it was easy to pull that scam off. Nowdays the IRS really looks at the SS numbers, last names, etc. It is even hard...or takes longer to get EIC portions of returns for parents that have children that have different last names...re-married etc.

I am with you...it is frutstrating that some of these people don't work hardly anything...but get a big refund check for EIC. I saw them time after time...just work long enough during the year to earn a certain amount...then get the check. But when you looked at it overall...they really weren't helping themselves. By the way...these were the ones that would gripe the most that their RAPID REFUND DIDN'T COME BACK fast enough.

As far as not telling anyone...well the company you worked for probably was like where I worked...sucker them in for the big fast refund...then if the IRS rejects it...or delays the refund?... The company still gets the outrageous fees they charged....that are taken automatically out of the refund. I have seen crazy people have a refund of $500.00 but pay over $200.00 to get $300 back in 1-3 days....and the form was REALLY simple. They could have filled it out themselves!

Roll Eyes Ummm,Vick? I don't know where you got those figures from but they are incorrect. You may only claim 2 kids on EIC and its $1,000 for each child. No one gets more than $2,000 back for EIC.

You absolutely can. You can claim 3 kids and get (depending on the income) $3600. I can't remember the exact cut off for each amount. There is a minimum and maximum. But, yep. You can.

Frankly the most difficult thing about reporting these people I work with (NOT friends with) is figuring out which last name they're filing in. They use several. And which kid they're claiming themselves. (Also use different last names from the baby daddy). And which neighbor they've loaned the kids to.

The tax service I worked with has since had several offices here in Birmingham busted for doing this very thing - BUT they were encouraging the people to file the EIC, helping them figure out how to get the highest refund and taking part of it as pay.

And the company obviously did NOT know which ones we turned in that we knew the details about. But I've heard more of them laughing and bragging at work here that I can't turn in cause who knows what name and/or kdis names they're using.

Jnzgl, I worked there 10 yrs ago, but the girls are still figuring out how to get that refund. But you are exactly right. YOU have been there and seen it, huh?

How about the boys coming in to file and claim their children and CANNOT SPELL THEIR NAMES?!!!

OMB I actually AGREE with A2D!!!!

Vick, if thats true then I need to switch tax preparers. We have used H&R Block for 17 yrs. and they have always told us you can only claim two kids on EIC.

You can claim how ever many children you have. You will however only get the earned income credit for 2 of them. So if you have 2 children you will get the same amount as if you have 5, but you do need to claim all children.
your right 46:1, What really gets me is the ones in the welfare line getting free money, that are driving high priced cars , wearing BIG diamond rings. While alot of people having a hard time making ends meet, driving a car they hope will get them where their going, and raising four kids, but make two dollars to much to collect any assistance

I agree completely. When I was 22, I was divorced, broke, and trying to get an education. I made $12,000 a year but was told I could only qualify for student loans. They told me that if I had a BABY, then I could get a Pell Grant and go to school for free. Along with the crazy tax situation, it really bugs me how people intelligent enough to use birth control are penalized and those popping out litters of children catch all the breaks..... Roll Eyes

I think its sickening that people claim things on taxes that they don't even have. Some people just like to get a free ride in life

I agree with you...but...its not only in taxes that people are dishonest. Frowner

That is correct. I shudder to think this person actually worked for a tax preparation service. Eeker

That's true. Sometimes they steal (or try to) other people's user names and post obscenities. Nasty people will do pretty much anything.
Hey Vick, I understand your frustration. Here in Texas there is no state sales tax. Therefore they make it up with property tax to fund the schools ect. But when you live near any border town and know for a fact that more than half of the students at most schools are illegal aliens and you are paying thousands a year to send them to school, that is frustrating also.
My wife works for the school system, so she has first hand experience with it.

Fraud is rampant everywhere!
