It seems like every other post on this forum asks that question. Even after an atheist explains why they post here they still get the question. So basically it's a rerun of a rerun but here goes ONE reason. Oh yes, they love their neighbors. As long as they aren't atheists or have a religion that goes against their beliefs. As long as those churches aren't ask to pay taxes to support those neighbors they love them big time, and in this one example they use some of the money they don't pay taxes on to stick their nose into government business. Because after all, that separation of church and state only means "we the people" stay out of their business. But don't worry, churches are worth billions, and the tiny bit they use to force government to do their bidding won't hurt them.

Churches speak out against Alabama immigration law

Southern Baptists approve path to legal status:

BIRMINGHAM | Some churches are objecting to Alabama’s tough new law that aims to clamp down on illegal immigration, saying it violates Christian principles in the heart of the Bible Belt.

Leaders of the United Methodist Church, the Episcopal Church, the Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic Church all have criticized the law as running counter to biblical teachings about caring for neighbors, helping visitors and showing hospitality to strangers. Episcopal Bishop Henry N. Parsley of Birmingham said the law “will make it impossible to love and be hospitable to our neighbors as we ought to be.”

Our economy is too sucky for the government to pay for millions of illegals education, health care, living expenses, etc.

Since they don't pay taxes into the system, why should they benefit? The churches can moan all they want too about a helping hand and open hearts, bu they won't be paying for  the costs.

When the Bible spoke of caring for neighbors, it meant NEIGHBORS, as in people in the neighborhood. Friends and family.  Not people who moved in on mass to get freebies.

Caring for strangers was to offer food and rest as they traveled on their way. If they moved into the neighborhood and contributed to the whole, then they became neighbors. They also were expected to share in all the work and all the hardships as well as the benefits.

Compassion and being taken for a sucker are not the same things.

So you are on the side of those that are standing up and speaking out against prayer being said over the PA at high school football games too, right?

Doesn't bother me why an Atheist post on this forum. I feel they have as much right to their unbelief, & give their opinion as the one that does believe.

I've learned from both, good & bad.

I'm sorry to see the hostility that can come from their opinion but that hostility comes from some believers too. And I'm just as guilty of that hostility as anyone. I really need to work on that.

But on a happy note, the churches in America are still worth BILLIONS and who gives a flying rip about Appalachia when there are illegals to support and give sanctuary from those mean old government folks?

That's painting all churches with a pretty broad brush.

I can promise you the church I attend is not worth billions. We don't even have our own building, we meet in a middle school. We do what we can to help others with what we have. We've sent people to help out in Hati, sent support to Alabama after the tornadoes, and we've sent people to help out orphanages in India.

Last Sunday instead of meeting at the middle school, some of our church members gave free oil changes for those who couldn't afford it, others worked by cleaning up a lower income area, and others cleaned up an historic site and park.

So it's not accurate to lump all churches together and say they're worth billions and do nothing. There are a lot of churches doing a lot of good out there.

First of all you can google and see that combined the churches in America are worth billions, don't twist it to mean I said every church. That is the money we know they have. There's no telling what their real worth is, we will never know that. Now let me get real snarky, how does it feel to clean up a historic site and park while these people are hungry? Why would you clean up a low income area? Does low income equate to being unable to pick up your own trash? Who tossed it there in the first place? Do you think they care? You just don't get it do you? Why send people to Haiti and ignore the people here? Tell me what you send to these people here. Why do I keep thinking about the movie "Clueless" when churches want to tell us about all the things they do for people outside their own country?

Why for goodness sake do churches in this country obsess on people in other countries before their own? There are enough churches in this area to tend to people after the tornado, but all I heard them doing was asking others to bring donations to them. Why? People were donating and helping each other all over with out any expectation of praise and many many were helped by people they still don't know.  People were going into their own pockets and buying food, gas, other things for their neighbors and the rescue workers. They were opening up their homes for people to charge phones and have showers, wash their clothes. Why didn't the church do the same and go out, buy the things they wanted to donate, and offer them to people? They didn't want to get up off that money is why. The catholic church will sorta admit to being worth around 115 billion, so that means you could probably double or even triple that. What would even one of those billion dollars do for an area? Oh and let's not forget the other thing churches do, defy the government and give sanctuary to illegals. You can't "p** out a forest fire".

Jimi! You actually posted something of substance!! So I will deign to respond.

Not ALL of us Christians want to legislate our beliefs into law. I am a Democrat, and I am disgusted by the Michelle Bachmans of the world. I agree that religion and politics should not mix.

Good for you. I didn't realize that Christians were allowed to be Democrats in Alabama.
