(from my home page)

The Washington Post has named "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer", Madonna's version of "Santa Baby", Barbra Streisand's "Jingle Bells" and the Jackson 5's "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" as four of the five worse Christmas songs.
The honor of the most hated Christmas song of all time goes to "Jingle Bells," as "performed" by the Singing Dogs, a 1955 Danish record that was reedited and released in 1970 and is better known as "The Barking Dogs". That's the word from Edison Media Research and Pinnacle Media Worldwide who independently of each other surveyed radio listeners to find out the holiday songs they most hated--and came up with the same answer.

--------------------
... i'll take the Barking Dogs over Stevie Nix's version of "Silent Night" anytime.

Oooh, oooh wait, wait! I have some!

And the best part is, THEY ALL SUCK!

1. A Froggy Christmas, © 2002 Rompin' Records - cdbaby.com/cd/froggy (If you hate the dogs, you'll love the frogs!)

2. Adam Carman: A Classical Christmas with Adam Carman, © 2007 Adam Carman - cdbaby.com/cd/adamcarman (Definitely NOT stylistic, and NOT Luciano Pavarotti)

3. Alfred St. John's Trinidad & Tobago Steelband: Caribbean Christmas Carnival, © 2008 Alfred St. John - cdbaby.com/cd/alstjohntts3 (One of My Favorite Things... NOT! Silent Night? You'd sure wish it was after hearing this!)

4. Amazing Amar: Merry Xmas, Happy New Year, © 2003 Charles - cdbaby.com/cd/amar2 (Amar? What? Amar and the Night Angels? Amar, amar... I had stroke while listening to it. Amar, amar!)

5. Andrew Driscoll: Just In Time For Christmas, © 1999 Conundrum Records - cdbaby.com/cd/driscoll (The first track, entitled " What Can You Get a Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)?" begs the answer, because if you get this album, it will be just in time for the trash man!)

6. AniMelodies: Carol of the Animals, © 2003 Gary L. Sattazahn - cdbaby.com/cd/animelodies2 (What do you get when you mix the sounds of Veggie Tales, Sesame Street and Thomas Train with reggae rhythms and zoo noise? I don't know. Let's just say, it's NOT a barnyard smash! But let's ask Mr. Pigg's opinion. "Oink!?" The "Safari Singers" and "Jungle Bell Orchestra" just don't do it.)

7. Arena Venus: Yuletide Swank, © 2004 Arena Venus - cdbaby.com/cd/arenavenus2 (Somehow, a sultry, smoky voice just doesn't seem to fit with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Yuletide Skunk! It stinks!)

8. Before Braille: Balance And Timing, © 2004 Before Braille - ("Merry Christmas, I'm Cheating" is NOT what anyone wants to hear during the holiday season. Buy this album ONLY if you're chronically depressed, homicidal and suicidal, or both.)

9. Christmas at the Devil's House: Christmas Music / Metal Madness: Santa Vs. Satan in a Guitar Duel, © 2007 Joe Thurber - cdbaby.com/cd/catdh (Even the artwork is too weird. Death metal for Christmas? I don't think so. What does one say about such an entitled album? Stay the H.ELL AWAY!)

10. Kevin and the Octaves: Hang Your Stocking Start the Rocking, © 2008 Nice Guy Records - cdbaby.com/cd/katoctaves (Punk rock and Christmas? Water and oil, anyone?)

It doesn't matter who does it, that opening lick makes me cringe every time. Way too cheesy.

I agree Nash. The others are novelty songs and are meant to be grating. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree with that twit singing it is just the pits.
I actually know people who tune in to that 96pointsomething station to hear Christmas music 24/7. To each his own. To quote Austin Powers, "That ain't my bag, baby!"
OOH Shoals Lover, just reading your list made my head hurt! Can't imagine hearing it! LOL

Momsy, I hate that song too. In fact, I hate all those sad Christmas songs - "Pretty Paper, Pretty Ribbons", The shoe song, any "talking" song where they tell a story over the music. ACCCK!!!!

I absolutely can not stand "Auld Lang Syne" by Dan Folgeburg. It's NOT a CHRISTMAS SONG FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!! It's a song about two people who happen to run into each other on Christmas Eve. Has nothing to do with Christmas but they want to play it all the time like it is!!!

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a rant. Smiler
Right, Autumn, Fogelburg's Auld Lang Syne is horrible. I do like listening to Xmas music on the radio and I'm frustrated that the 96.9 station plays that song about once an hour.

That is just a song about two old "lovers", one of whom is now married to a guy that she admits marrying for security instead of love, sneaking off in a car and getting wasted together. No, that's not inappropriate at all. I'll teach it to my kids and we'll sing it around the fireplace together. ;-)
12 Days of Christmas makes me want to rip my face off! I HATE that song... (however 12 PAINS of Christmas is one I absolutely adore!!!)

I was in Kirkland's last night and 12 Days of Christmas came on the speakers - it took all I had to continue to look for a gift in there vs. running out screaming!

I also can't stand:
"Midnight at the Oasis" - not sure if it's actually a Christmas song but in working retail it was on EVERY SINGLE Christmas CD that they played at every store I ever worked in! Drove me NUTS!

And I totally agree with "Santa Baby"... BLECH! HATE IT!
"Midnight at the Oasis" ? So NOT a Christmas song. That's just weird.
Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Shadows paintin' our faces
Traces of romance in our heads
Heaven's holdin' a half-moon
Shinin' just for us
Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon
And kick up a little dust
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evenin' ends
Till the evenin' ends
You don't have to answer
There's no need to speak
I'll be your belly dancer, prancer
And you can be my sheik

I know your Daddy's a sultan
A nomad known to all
With fifty girls to attend him, they all send him
Jump at his beck and call
But you won't need no harem, honey
When I'm by your side
And you won't need no camel, no no
When I take you for a ride
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evenin' ends
Till the evenin' ends
Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Got shadows paintin' our faces
And traces of romance in our heads

Exactly! Glad I'm not the only one! Smiler blech.
Oh no!

Please!

"Midnight at the Oasis" was performed and popularized by Maria Muldaur in 1973, and which was likely the true beginning her career (although she had nearly ten years experience then).

It is the song for which she is best known, because of it's highly evocative (yet not explicit) sensuality. (Would that such tastefully written lyrics would again emerge, rather than the blatancy which passes as "romance" today.)

It's a love song, and she has such a luscious voice!

If you have heard of David Grisman or Bob Dylan, then you should be at least familiar with some of her work, because the they all collaborated at one time or another in the 1960's.

Sorry, Ms. Muldaur. I didn't know you were on here or I wouldn't have been critical of the lyrics to that amazing wonderful song that apparently you didn't write. Tell Mr. Dylan and whoever that other dude is that I said hello. If only I'd been alive in the 60's I could better appreciate such fine art. ;-)
Like "folk" style music?

Remember Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead renown?

And remember reading David Grisman's name in a post in response to "Midnight at the Oasis" in this thread?

Shady Grove (a traditional American folk song) is track #1 of their 1996 collaboration album also so entitled.

{Production notes: David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, producers; David Dennison, engineer; recorded @ Dawg Studios}

Those familiar with bluegrass music have most likely heard of David Grisman. The names of the musicians Vassar Clemments, Bela Fleck, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs are all in the same genre - bluegrass and/or folk.
Christmas has always been a sad time for some people. For the same reason, the Christmas season can also claim the dubious distinction of having an abnormally high suicide rate.

Some "old timers" may recall Jim Reeves song, "Christmas Card"...

"Pardon me if a tear
falls among my Christmas Cheer,
It's the memory of an old Christmas Card.."

then i must be an old timer....
that song always gets to me.
Ok...having been exposed to more Chirstmas music on the radio in the past day or so--This one makes my heart pond and I get all anxious. That "bells" song--

hark! hear the bells!
ding dong the bells!
so many bells!
ring-a-dingy bells!
holy cats the bells!
good grief the bells!
big shiny bells!
bells!bells!bells!bells!

followed by a swirls of ring-a-ings and ding-a-lings...

"The Christmas Insanity Song"
