You are a time traveller. You have come back here for a few years from the year 2060, to gather data for your new ebook on the history of the (former?) USA.

What did you see? What will you write about?

Alexis deToqueville was not granted time travel, but his observations on early America were accurate and relevant. We depend on them today to guage the attitudes of the Founding generation.

How will the people in 2060 see us when you go back to report?

With the direction we're going, no one in 2060 will be smart enough to build a time machine.

Example. This movie was number one at the box office this weekend.

Yes, lots of people paid money to sit and watch that.

Combine that with who this country picked for presidential candidates and it's clear the dumb people are out breeding the smart ones. The generation of 2060 will refer to this time as "When smrt people livd and done smrt stuff".

LOL, you could be right. No doubt you've seen the movie "Idiocracy"?

I have, it was exactly what I was thinking about. Funny movie, but the beginning is so accurate it's scary.

The other night on CBS (I think) prime time, the show was two guys beating the piss out of each other. No kidding, that's all it was. MMA is signing major prime time broadcast deals and they are getting good ratings. More people vote for the American Idol than the president, and movies about talking chiwawas top the box office.

Smart people need to start hitting it more, we're getting outnumbered by retards. Like this guy.

Nash, are you going to vote for President? I can't decide what to do myself, I don't like either of our choices so how does a person choose? Frowner Confused
After WW2, when the USA was the decisive element, America assumed it's pre-eminence in world affairs. The privilege of defeating the evil forces of that war became a mandate to spread it's concept of righteousness around a world that disagreed.

Having learned little from a devastating Depression, the economic model of the US assumed that perpetual growth and disproportionate affluence was its birthright. It did not learn the dangers of economic "leverage" from the stock market of the 1920's and repeated its mistake in the mortgage market of the 2000's. Both parties, but mostly the Democrats who pressured banks to lend money to those unable to repay them under the Community Reinvestment Acts, were to blame.

A reliance on foreign countries for essential material goods, such as energy and manufactured goods, weakened the country to the point where all it had to offer was financial services and other services. The basis of wealth, adding value to material, was considered beneath the dignity of most of the financial elite.

The monetary system of the USA was corrupted long ago, but maintained by its economic prowess until now. Under the Federal Reserve system, all money was a reflection of national debt, rather than a reflection of wealth. It was doomed to fail, and did.

Gone was the American spirit of hard work and thrift. Replacing it was a belief that god intended Americans to be affluent, as a reward for their piety, as well as a sense of entitlement, as Americans, that exaggerated prosperity was the very definition of Americanism. Americans became too clever to work hard, or so they thought.

Americans have come to believe that consumerism is the basis of their economy. Banks, investment houses, and mutual funds lending money to one another was considered as economically strong as selling cheeseburgers and nail jobs at minimum wage. The "service" economy drove down wages almost as much as the illegal immigration that most Americans disregarded as incidental.

The confidence in its economic model that has prevailed since WW2 is now gone. And still, people buy cars made in Germany and toxic toys made in China, while their factories decay and rust.

The people are wary of the Socialist remedies to their economic problems, but distrustful of the capitalist alternative, and are willing to abandon that which has provided their former, and possibly future, glory.

The citizens accept confiscatory taxes, corrupt government, a failed two-party political system, a dishonest media, a failed and agenda-driven education system, and psychologically sophisticated manipulative religions as "progress", and still proclaim themselves the Freest People On Earth.

We now know how it turns out. They have no idea, our poor grandparents. If only we could tell them.
