How do I send a picture through email, that has been transferred from my camera, without it ending up GI-NORMOUS when the recipient receives it?

I have just recently gotten a new camera and have also taken my computer to the "doc" for an overhaul. Before that, I have never had a problem.

At this point, I don't know if it is a setting that I need to change on my computer or my camera. I figured it would be easier to ask you guys than to start trying to figure it out myself.

Thanks for any advise that you can give!

solution one: don't take the pictures in high-resolutions. see your camera manual/menu for details.

benefits: no work later
cons: if you want a higher quality picture, you have to go back and take it, or have major quality loss.

solution two: choose a program (ACDSee is what i used when i was a windows user) and let it do all the conversions for you.

benefits: you can store the HQ originals in case you need them
cons: you have to install a piece of software and familiarize yourself with it

free/open source solutions to solution two:
ifranview
picasa

i am not sure of the current state of these projects, i am not a user of either since my transition to linux.

i don't really have suggestions for a paid/closed source program, i haven't ran one of those in years.
An easy way to resize an image on any Windows computer is through Paint. Start, All Programs, Accessories, Paint. Once in Paint, click File, Open, browse to the image and click it. Then click Image, Stretch/Skew, and type a number smaller than 100 in both the Horizontal and Vertical boxes. For instance, if you want to reduce the image by half, enter 50 in both boxes. The smaller image can be saved with a slightly different file name, so that you have both versions.
