yanno that is wierd. To each his own I suppose. I actually do not care what is done with my old body once I am dead. Altho, I have never liked the idea of an open casket and be gawked at by anyone. Dead people do not "look good", they do not "look natural".
I certainly do not want to be on "display" for 3 days! hibbie gibbies for sure
Smurph, I agree with you. I don't know why people have to see the dead person, and make such a fuss if it is closed casket.
Here lately I have had to attend several funerals, at almost every one, someone will ask me do I want to walk up with them to visit? I just cannot stand to stand over a dead person and stare at them. The very first funeral I went to was an uncle, I was thinking is he fixing to wake up any minute now?
I used to avoid funerals, but have come to the conclusion that it is for the survivors and not the dead, so now I go every time I can, but, I do avoid going and gawking at the deceased.
When I saw this article yesterday, I began thinking about Victorian era post mortem photography, which I knew nothing of until I watched The Others (movie) years ago. I had never looked for information related to it until yesterday, and I found many old photographs. I looked at them for a long time last night. Apparently families would photograph their deceased, often in a way to make it appear as though they are still alive, or maybe sleeping. Some are in their casket, but sometimes they are posed upright with their family, and their eyes are propped open or painted on afterward. This might be the only time the person was photographed, since cameras certainly weren't mainstream. I was expecting the photographs to be very creepy, but they are quite peaceful and beautiful.

I'll post a couple of links, but it may not be your cup of tea, so if not, please don't look! There are a lot of children and babies, due to the high mortality rate. I'm fascinated by old photographs, so these were no exception.
