You people in charge need to pull your heads out and get it right for a change. Here you supposedly have had a three animal limit for years. The people who own the killer dogs have 6 and yet you had to pass a vicious animal ordinance to do something about theirs and YET, the couple who takes great care of their animals ( as shown on WAFF this morning), the ones with not only a REAL fence, but lots of love, food, medical care and blankets, toys, etc (as evidenced every time I drive by their house and see the backyard), a virtual HAVEN for them, is having to pay fines, serve time, or get rid of their furry family members? The Animal Control officer says on the news he has been dogging this sweet couple for months, yet where was he while the killer dog owner with NO FENCE let his dogs run all over the city terrorizing people? What are you all, nuts? How hard is it to let people have how many animals they can afford to vet and feed, and still weed out the bad ones? There is a way to keep irresponsible people from hoarding and yet allow people who care well for their pets to keep them but evidently you all can't figure it out. How many Sheffield politicians does it take to change a lightbulb?

That woman on the news is right. Twice I have called PAWS when I found strays only to be told they couldn't take any more animals and asked if I could "Foster" them. Well, you can't foster a dog without a fostering license in Sheffield and it's not easy to get one. It's horrid for people who'd like to keep the dogs and can afford to NOT to able to because of this stupid law. I know people who have left Sheffield because of it and moved either to MS or Florence. Sheffield is turning to dust and it's partially because of issues just like this one.

i can almost guarantee you that with the RIGHT training invisible fencing works better than traditional fencing. My Lab has NEVER attempted to leave my yard, EVER. It's obvious the owner of these dogs did not take the proper steps in order to ensure that his dogs stayed in the yard, so don't sit there in front of your computer and criticize a very great product in my opinion just because of one idiot.
Next thing you know they will give us a 2 kid limit like China did...they are taking away our freedoms more and more. If I have the space and ability to care for multiple animals it should be up to me to make that choice, not a City imposed ordinance. This is going to put more animals in our shelters and create more strays when people have to dump their animals in the county...

thomaswayne, you are missing the whole point here, you have have proven many of my points, and there's no reason to take that tone. I know underground electric fences can be just as effective as other fences when used properly. My comment about a "real" fence meant any type of fencing that is effective, and by your own admission, this mans fence was not effective. It wasn't working properly, whether mechanically or because his dogs either weren't trained to stay inside or weren't wearing their collars, it really doesn't matter. They (the man, the city, and animal control) allowed these dogs to run for weeks, with complaint after complaint, and we also have the neighbors of a different person whose dogs were running loose day after day attend a council meeting to voice their concerns. The couple who is providing loving care for their animals and are able to contain them to their own property are being penalized. They already had a 3 animal limit in the city which they didn't enforce with the man. The law is outdated and should be repealed. People who can provide for more than three animals and vet and register them should be able to keep them. Would you agree? THAT is the point I am making here. Incidentally, yes, the little dog should have been on a leash, BUT, you may remember a similar case in Tuscumbia recently where a woman walking her little Yorkie ON A LEASH watched her lttle dog attacked and she was hurt as well. A leashed pet can get attacked, too, you know. What Sheffield needs to realize is that imposing a LIMIT doesn't mean the animals that meet the criteria are being cared for, or the animals that exceed the limit are not, and change the law instead of looking like fools in front of God and everybody. Sheesh. And, you all might like to know that it's ANY combination of three animals. Got four cats, or two dogs and two cats, or a bird and a cat and two dogs? Don't think you're safe just because you don't let them out. They even count a rabbit or a guinea pig in a cage, folks. Oh, and on that note, a pet rabbit is considered livestock on the Sheffield lawbooks and that's illegal for a whole 'nother reason. No livestock in the city limits. They WILL confiscate that bunny you gave your kids last Easter if they find out you have it. The animal lovers who live in Sheffield need to demand some action, quickly and loudly.

Fences ,thats not the problem at all.I live in Sheffield ,in my neighborhood come night fall people turn the dogs out, big ones, little ones ,PIT bulls ,beagles, it doesn't matter.I came home the other night and there was a female PIT Bull in my fenced in back yard.I could see that she had pups and was lactating, she was hungry,I had to let her out of my yard after she had cleaned up the food scraps and the cats food.A few months ago there was a pair of RED PITS that ran the neighborhood every night.Sheffield just does not have the money to enforce the law ,whether it's, the leash law or the vehicle noise ordinance.
I guess since i don't live in the city and don't deal with these issues then i just don't get it. i know where i'm from any dog causing trouble is shot dead on the spot anytime the lives of another species is threatened , but i do live in the country and not the city so i see where this isn't always possible. but maybe just maybe people shouldn't wait on the city to fix this problem. i have a pit that comes in my yard, plays with my lab and has never shown any aggression. but when my son gets here and is big enough to play outside you can bet your last dollar that i won't be relying on the neighbor to keep him on a chain or in his yard. that's how we roll in the country.
I think something needs to be done with our animal control in Sheffield. I had four dogs and when a nosy neighbor complained they chewed me up and down and even threatened me and told me I had to give one up. My dogs were never mistreated and very good dogs. And they also had one of my dogs and when I called them they were really rude to me and told me they didn't have my dog and 2 days later called and told me they were mistaken she was there. I think they need to get people working who actually care about dogs instead of being rude to people who can't help if the yard man left the gate open.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the City of Sheffield needs to be incorporated into the closest financially secure and responsible government. Sheffield cannot continue to support and police itself and it's now obvious that they cannot make, change, or enforce proper laws, either.

I live in Sheffield and dogs are a problem, even in the daytime. Some days I don't walk for them.

I'd still rather live here than in the county with those that would shoot anything that moved.

2 is too many for a lot of people around here
I have a 22 that will take care of any vicious dog in my yard. If I am having to pay for a vet bill for my dog, someone is going to be burying theirs. I'll be sure to do it while it is on my property as well.

I have a dog and he has gotten out once or twice, but my neighbors know who he is and whose dog he is (and he is a lab, so hes freindly and has met most of the neighbors.) If I had a pit or any other dog that people think of as vicious, I would make sure he is secure in my yard, and NOT with a zapper, that just ticks them off when they get through it.
