Gracie, I agree. I don't base my "likes" on what politicians or sports figures say. But, I also don't choose who to vote for based on party affiliation. I don't care if a person is a Democrat or Republian. I base my choice on the person, their beliefs, and what they bring to the office. Truth be known, the local Dems likely agree with your conservative point of view anyway.

I would agree with that, but there is no Republican opposition in this race. So it's going to be either Sandlin or Jackson. I realize many will vote in the Republican run-off because of the gov. race, but if you do vote in the Dem. run-off, you need to look at the morals of these two guys and choose wisely.

I agree with ya, bubbaluck. So you all please go vote for Sandlin for me; I'm voting in the Repub runoff.
Jelb-

I am a conservative, not a Republican. I vote for the best person in any given race. That person is never the Dem. To be a Dem, you are obviously aligning yourself with the Democrat Party, and by that alignment, you are agreeing with the Democratic platform. I can't go there, period.
As far as Sandlin goes, wasn't he leading a double life a few years ago, which seemed to go against the whole "family values" that he was promoting?
I will be voting in the Gov's primary race, so I don't have a dog in this hunt. I go to church w/ Josh and Billy, but I still won't be voting for Jackson.

Gracie's Old man...
I'd like to know your definition of "best person." I know a lot of good, honest, Christian, Conservative Democrats who are the better, more qualified candidates in this year's elections. By "aligning" with the Democrat Party, that doesn't mean they support every "national liberal stance" the national liberal Democrats take. I hate to tell you this, but there are liberal Republicans too. There are Republicans who call themselves conservative who support gay marriage and are pro-choice (prime example - Laura Bush).

My point is this - the labels of Democrat and Republican, or even conservative and liberal don't mean a darn thing to me. People throw those terms around when many times they don't even know what they mean. It just seems to be the popular catchphrase or something.

I want to know who the person is, their background, their experiences, their positions on the issues, and what they intend to do if elected.

And one more thing - I consider myself "a conservative" too.
If you officially put yourself out there as a Democrat candidate you are saying that you ARE a Democrat, thus you agree w/ the tenets of the party. In my opinion, you can't be a Christian and also be aligned w/ a party that believes in and promotes abortion, gay marriage, etc.
Those few Repubs who, as you say, are pro abortion and for gay marriage are few and far between and are referred to as RINO's, (republican in name only), comprise only a small fraction and should be avoided like the plague.
On the other hand, the majority of Dems believe that way on abortion and gay marriage. They should also be avoided like the plague.
So, labels DO mean something. That's why those names stick. That's how a catchphrase becomes a catchphrase.
I can't believe this has to be spelled out.
Laura Bush is not a politician, but it doesn't excuse her.

Since I haven't been in Sandlin's courtroom, I can't comment on his capabilities, but I can say this. Let's say you're looking for a business manager for your company. You have two applicants and you test them.

Applicant 1 makes 95 on his test and Applicant 2 makes 90 on his. So 1 is undoubtedly smarter than 2, right? But Applicant 1 will steal you blind.

Which one do you hire?
I have been in court under Mr. Sandlin trying to get a divorce. He made us jump though hoops requesting that we take counseling (and surprise, surprise- there was counselor right there in the courtroom waiting to take us on as clients at $150 per hour). Then when he wanted his divorce he went to another county and got one in a very short time- Practice what you preach!!!

I am voting for Jackson.
So Katgurl you would not vote for someone who did eventually grant you a divorce and would vote for someone who will not let their religion grant a divorce, just curious I find it funny.
When looking at the 2 candidates Sandlin has only ever ran for one office, unlike Jackson who has ran for the DA office in the last election and it was actually on the Republican ticket, but if this county wants to get rid of free programs that do not cost tax dollars go ahead I know I will never have to use them anyways, but that is your choice to vote for who you would vote for.
I am not voting for Jackson for a couple of reasons, number 1 lack of experience in family court, number 2 he wants to break up the family court and do away with the programs which in turn would cost about 20 jobs for this area and jobs that are paid through grants not tax dollars, look it up you can find out that information on Alabama's state website. Number 3 I work with a guy who has put up numerous Sandlin signs on his property and they keep getting tore down and someone will keep putting Jackson signs, and I find that very childish plus he is not the only person to have this happen to them.
So I just ask people to look up facts and look at it that way before we elect someone who does not believe in divorce, so how will he grant them?
By the way Jackson refused to have a debate with Sandlin, and when they did talk out at Handy (which I was in attendance) Jackson said I do plan on cutting all the programs Sandlin has put in.

According to the td on 7/4, Jackson said this: Jackson, 48, a Florence attorney and former district attorney in Lauderdale County, said he has heard rumors that he will dismantle some of the family court programs, but added he has no such plans. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” Jackson said.
Please explain what experience he has in family court there yellowdog?

Plus Trutooit you are correct that was in the Times but it is after he retracted his statement which he preivously stated he would dismantle it, Ask the people out at Handy that day they will tell you.

For the sake of Lauderdale County I pray Jackson does not win this election because if that happens we will only have one good judge left on the bench and that is Gil Self.

Why didn't anyone run against Jones he is terrible?

Only a closed-minded Republican would say the "tenets" of the Democratic Party are the promotion of abortion and gay rights. Likewise, a closed-minded Democrat would say the "tenets" of the Republican party are tax breaks for the wealthy, protection for big oil and and other corporations, and to force everyone to pray and own a gun. Those are stereotypes that are simply unfair to use, especially in a "blanket" characterization. I'm just glad the "radicals" in both parties make up a small fraction and that most Americans do avoid those individuals "like the plague."

And I wholeheartedly disagree that you cannot be a Christian a Democrat at the same time. Only a closed-minded Republican would make such a claim. That's like saying you cannot be gay and a Republican. I'm sure the Log Cabin Republicans would disagree. Ha! Oh wait, those people must be RINOs!
Jelb-
You are the close minded one. I didn't make this stuff up. It isn't MY opinion. This is what the party platforms say:

ON ABORTION

Democrats-

"The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports
Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal
abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and
all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. (p50)"

Republicans-

"Faithful to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence, we
assert the inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life and affirm that
the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot
be infringed. (p52)"

-----------------------
ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Democrats-

We support the full inclusion of all families, including samesex
couples, in the life of our nation, and support equal
responsibility, benefits, and protections. We will enact a
comprehensive bipartisan employment non-discrimination
act. We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts
to use this issue to divide us. (p52)

Republicans-

"…we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as
a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other
arrangements equivalent to it. In the absence of a national amendment,
we support the right of the people of the various states to affirm
traditional marriage through state initiatives. (p53)"

As far as big oil, corporations, forcing prayer and gun ownership, you CAN'T point to a party's platform to make your case, because it's your opinion. We know big oil and corporations give to both parties. We know BP, for instance, gave more money to Obama than any other politician in the last 20 years. We know Countryside Mortgage gave Chris Dodd of Connecticut huge campaign contributions and special mortgage favors, etc. He happened to be in a position to help the mortgage industry. I don't know any Republican ever stating they wanted "to force everyone to pray and own a gun".

As far as gay Republicans, we know there is such, but they, again, are few and far between, have no significance, and no one is making any attempt to refuse membership to the Republican Party. And yes, they are RINOs.

I'll keep backing up my position with sourced facts and you keep tossing out your unsubstantiated opinions. Thinking people can discern the difference.
Look everyone has their mind made up. All I'm saying is "Billy lives with his family and they have all supported him now and always without any sort of threats or promises." I just think a family court judge should be head and shoulders above the crowd. And by the way, yep I'm a Democrat, I'm a Christian and I'm saved by grace. I work out my salvation daily with fear and trembling. Oh that's in the Bible, good night!

Gracie, don't get so upset. Your radicalism is getting your blood pressure up. I never said those things weren't included in the party platform. I simply said most Democrats would not agree with a closed-minded Republican who said the "tenets" of the party include these things. Most Democrats are Democrats because they want to help the less fortunate among us, protect public schools and children, make sure our elderly are taken care of, and give working class Americans a fair shake. Yes, I will concede that there are some Democrats who push an extremely radical liberal agenda (i.e. gay rights, abortion), but to use your words, those individuals are "few and far between" especially in the South. I hope we can agree to disagree.

I am a conservative leaning moderate who has voted for both Democrats and Republicans in the past. I research the candidates (not necessarily the party platform) to discover the best and most qualified of the candidates. And, to your surprise, many times that person who gets my vote is a Democrat. And yes that oftentimes is MY OPINION. To each his own. However, my opinions are formed by the FACTS. I just choose not to take a party platform and make blanket judgments about everyone who wears that particular label.

I appreciate the spirited discussion we've had here. Signing off now...
intheknow13:

Since you are "In The Know" maybe you can answer this question for me as I have heard it on the rumor mill and really want to know the truth.

One of these candidates set his girlfriend (the one he got divorced over) up in a job that he was able to funnel clients to, through his court system? This was all prior to his divorce, which he was able to obtain quite effortlessly.

Just curious...

As I see it, everybody should fall into one of two categories.

1 If you're a Christian/Jew/Muslim whatever, you don't want an adulterer as a judge.

2 If you're not the above but have any lick of common sense you don't want a man who uses our tax dollars to give his married (then) girlfriend a job.

Anybody can justify this in any way?
Trutooit-II- Excellent points.

As far as the "Free Programs". My then husband and I were "Subpoenaed" to appear in Sandlin's offices one afternoon. Timing was not great for either of us due to previously scheduled appointments/conflicts. When we got there, we were met by two members of a church who were going to counsel with us. So basically- we were ordered to the judges office to meet with members of a church..... Not our church, not a church we had any affiliation with. I felt this was an abuse of the court system.

REMEMBER TO GET OUT AND VOTE TOMORROW! Good luck to all, but may Judge Sandlin win!

To get his foot in what door? Circuit judge is pretty good. Are you saying he wants to be on state appeals court? No matter, I support Billy Jackson.

Remember, an adulterer won't inherit the Kingdom of God. We just had a lot of posts about Colbert District Judge saying a person without kids couldn't be a family court judge. How about a man who's divorced? And it is his fault, make no mistake about it.

You'd think even if he wanted to have an affair he'd have enough sense to not give his girl friend a job with taxpayer money.

Anybody who votes for Sandlin is short a few bricks in the common sense dept.
I worked for the organization where Judge Sandlin's mistress worked. Let's just say I was disgusted with them. How can anyone vote for a man who sleeps with more than one woman yet runs on a christian platform??? I have know Sandlin for years and he is a disappointment. I will gladly vote for Billy Jackson who has the right moral values to be an amazing family court judge. Sandlin is a hypocrite.
bamagirl:

It has been asked, but not answered. All I have heard are rumors and Intheknow13 would not respond to these questions.
1. Did Sandlin have anything to do with the mistress getting her job.
2. Did she in anyway receive clients from his position in the court?

Tokyolove: I have first hand knowledge of his judicial experience and I had already raised an eyebrow at some of the hoops that we were required to jump though. Then when I heard these rumors and found out his divorce went though faster than mine with out the extra expense I was totally disgusted. My question to you: Did he go through counseling?
Last time I checked, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and our heavenly Father expects us to forgive our brothers and sisters when they fall short...

For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

He who covers and forgives an offense seeks love, but he who repeats or harps on a matter separates even close friends.

I in no way condone anyone's willful act of sin, but I'm just tired of hearing it repeated over and over and over....with malice...and clear intent to damage Mr. Sandlin's life...beyond what has already been done....

Everyone knows what happened. Let's just move on...everyone knows who they're gonna vote for by now anyway...let the votes fall where they may.

Sandlin brought the CITY program to Lauderdale county and his "friend" was hired as the head of it. Can't say who had final word, but he was her boss so to speak.

I don't think anybody doesn't forgive Sandlin. They just know that when you make a mistake you have to pay for it. I always liked Sandlin until all this, but he lost my vote over it.

Katgurl:

To answer both your questions: Yes. The CITY Program was a program that involved counseling and school for juveniles in the system. He sent students to the CITY program where she was the director.
